Matt Jacob Photography

Matt Jacob Photography Photographer & Host of The Mood Podcast Naturally, my love for photography was cemented. The world opened up before my eyes, both literally and figuratively.

My name is Matt and I'm a photographic artist who specializes in capturing the evocative, dynamic, and complex lives of my subjects. With a focus on authentically encapsulating a moment from all metaphorical angles within a photograph, and a story over a collection, I have dedicated my passion and skills to truly understanding the essence of different perspectives, as well as the ‘why’ behind diff

erent forms of human nature. My journey began as a boy with a disposable camera and a dream to become a pilot, and these two things would eventually culminate into reality. My outlook on life changed when I was diagnosed with cancer at a young age, and it was during this time in my life that I understood what it meant to be truly alive - it was about just a series of moments; watching, understanding and creating snapshots that will stand the test of time. In 2013, the once disposable ambition was realized -I bought my first ‘real’ camera for achieving my dream aviation job. and I became exposed to cultures and backgrounds beyond the life I knew, and I'm fortunate to this day that my travels continue to take me to the new and unknown. What’s really keeping creatives stuck?

Comment ZAHRA and I will send you the link to the full episode.

In this episode, I sit down with psychologist Zahra Ciardi to explore why so many creatives feel disconnected from their work, how limiting beliefs shape what we create, and what it takes to share our work without being controlled by validation.

We discuss the inner critic, avoidance, childhood conditioning, social media, self-worth, healing, and the psychology behind creative expression. By the end, you’ll have a clearer understanding of why your photography may not feel like yours anymore—and how to reconnect with your authentic creative voice.

Have you ever felt like you were creating for approval rather than for yourself?

Following the crowd rarely creates new perspective.

A Magnum photographer with 16 books and 30 trips to America just admitted he is making it up as he goes along. He avoids every place a guidebook tells him to go. Because if everyone else is already there photographing it what can you possibly add?

Do you follow the crowd or find your own path?

She built her life around one principle. Show up.

**Comment MITTY and I will send the link for this episode to you.**

Cristina Mittermeier coined the term conservation photography, co-founded SeaLegacy, and made the starving polar bear image seen by 2.5 billion people. Now she sits down with me to talk about finding a photographic voice that actually means something, why a point of view separates an artist from a craftsman, and the one principle she has built her entire life around.

What does showing up look like for you right now? Let me know in the comments.

Every photo has consequences.

A former photojournalist who photographed communities across America says the weight of accountability never leaves him. Every image you make tells someone’s story. The question is whether you are telling it right.

How do you stay accountable to the people you photograph?

The work isn’t in shooting…

Most photographers think the answer is shooting more. One of Magnum’s most respected photographers disagrees. The real work happens when you put the camera down. Are you spending enough time with what you’ve already made?

When did you last sit with your own work?

In September I’m taking a small group to Sumba. 6 people, 12 days.

I’ve been going there for years now — same villages, same faces — and it’s honestly one of the places that changed how I think about this whole thing. The Marapu communities in Kodi in the southwest still live around their ancestral tombs, still weave ikat by hand, still hold ceremonies that have nothing to do with tourism. None of that opened up on my first trip. It took time. Showing up repeatedly until you stop being a stranger.

So that’s what I’m offering — the access and the slow pace that actually lets something happen.

If that sounds like the kind of trip you’ve been looking for, the link is in my bio for more info, or just send me a message and I’ll send the link to you.

We go September 19th.

Your buyer isn’t thinking what you think.

Every time you assume your collector can’t afford your prices you are making the decision for them. But here’s what they are actually thinking when they look at your work. This changes everything about how you sell.

Have you ever talked yourself out of charging more before a buyer even had the chance to decide?

Comment RICH & I will send you the link to the full episode.

Rich-Joseph Facun spent 15 years as a photojournalist before walking away entirely. What came next changed everything about how he makes work, sees people, and thinks about who gets to tell which stories.

In this episode we get into photographing strangers in Trump-era Appalachia as a person of colour with a trans child, the ethics of street portraiture, finding your voice after mastering the craft, and why he launched his own Indigenous-owned photo book imprint to give marginalised photographers a way in.

Your photography is shaped long before you press the shutter.

Joe McNally explains how your upbringing, curiosity, and empathy influence your photography. Storytelling isn’t just technique, it’s the heart of making images that connect. How does your life influence your photography? I would love to hear your story.

The smarter you are the worse this gets.

Every reason you have for not raising your prices feels completely real. Completely logical. Completely based on evidence. But a six figure art coach says that is exactly what a brain built for survival does. It protects you from risk.

Even when the only risk is sending a higher invoice.

What would you charge without fear?
