The Lukat Geni tradition of fire war before Nyepi Day on the island of Bali, Indonesia.

Balinese youths engage in a fire fight using dried coconut leaves in the Lukat Geni tradition at Paksebali Village, Klungkung Regency, on the island of Bali, Indonesia, on March 18, 2026. This tradition takes place on the eve of Pengerupukan, before Nyepi. The practice of self-purification with fire is believed to ward off disaster, cleanse physical and spiritual impurities, and neutralize negative energy. Nyepi, a day of silence, occurs on March 18, during which people are prohibited from leaving their homes, working, and lighting fires or lamps for 24 hours, dedicated to silence, self-control, self-reflection, meditation, and introspection to achieve inner balance and harmony.

Our Story

To celebrate the eleventh anniversary of PannaFoto Institute, April 19, 2017, we are delighted to launch Panna Mentorship 2017. A scholarship program in the form of photography training for young photography enthusiasts or young Indonesians, who are interested and committed to developing visual storytelling skills. The program will last for 4 (four) months, from August to November 2017. Scholarship recipients will receive theoretical material, assignments to make 1 (one) photography project, and present the final results to the public. The teaching and learning process is divided into meetings and long-distance mentorship, guided by practitioners who are experienced in their fields. This program complements what PannaFoto Institute has done, as an effort to realize our mission to develop critical thinking skills using a visual approach.
