Betel chewing—commonly a mix of areca nut (pinang), betel leaf (sirih), and slaked lime—is a widespread tradition in Indonesia. It serves as a stimulant, a digestive aid, and a social gesture, especially in rural or indigenous communities. Offering betel is a sign of respect, and chewing it is both a personal and communal ritual, often passed down generations. The red-stained lips and teeth are markers not of neglect, but of cultural identity and continuity. I tried it already in Myanmar so I politely passed my turn this time 😅
