For four nights I returned to the deserted streets of pre-innauguration D.C. witnessing every corner cloaked in a blue expanse of almost uninterrupted silence lying under the din of flags fluttering in the bitter wind. I felt this sense of space and freedom and, at the same time, the overwhelming sense that I was where shouldn’t be…as if something was amiss, turned upside down, and out of reach. In the days since then, I have often wondered, ‘where do we go from here’?

The sun sets on another day on the streets of D.C. On this day, though, there is change in the air.

With four hours left in his term, Donald Trump left the White House by helicopter as onlookers watched overhead from Black Lives Matter Plaza.

Images taken yesterday while civilians danced and communed in the plaza, counting down the hours to welcome and as the next President and Vice President of the United States.

The intersection of ‘normalcy’ and the occupation of D.C. by the flow mostly parallel to each other, but, occasionally, there is a soft and gentle moment in which I am reminded that we are so lifted by the kindness of dogs.

The last two images speak to the attempt to visually document this moment in our nation’s Capitol. Photographers and journalists bike and walk around the perimeter, peering through fence openings into the faces of those sent to defend our public officials.

Walking through the Washington Welcome Center, it occurs to me that we make merchandise out of everything in the U.S. The presidencies and politics that send human beings to war, decide the future of immigrants, and create structure to navigate a pandemic are all boiled down to plastic figurines, magnets, and t-shirts. In the moment when an American president’s likeness becomes a toilet bowl brush, what changes about the way we view the presidency? Is it easier to assimilate to a particular storyline if it’s printed on a t shirt? How do we create our reality? Where do these things go when no one wants them anymore? When everything becomes part of a commodity culture, how do we assign meaning?

Opposite sides of the same street...the ladies who own Pete’s Diner are used to standing room only during an Inauguration. This year they serve the occasional journalist or neighbor and kindly send coffee and water through the fence at the Library of Congress where the National Guard secures the perimeter.

Protesters gather in the newly named Black Lives Matter Plaza directly in front of the White House on Saturday, June 6, 2020. In the first two images, a man stands still amidst the crowds for hours with his sign depicting George Floyd and the protest mantra ‘No justice, no peace’. In the last two images, protesters make clear their ideas about Trump and the glaring issue of police brutality that infects the U.S. justice system.

Tear gas, rubber bullets and pepper spray are utilized against protesters demanding justice for the death of George Floyd in Minneaopolis, MN on May 31, 2020. The new charges against the other three officers involved in Floyd’s death as well as the escalating of charges against Chauvin, the officer who knelt on Floyd’s neck for nearly 9 minutes, are a welcome development in the case but conversations are still evolving around the reform necessary regarding “overhauling police procedures and systematic inequities”, says The New York Times. Former President Barack Obama has given statements from his home asking for all mayors to take a close look at police reforms such as “mandatory de-escalation of conflicts, a ban on shooting at moving vehicles, timely reporting of violent incidents and prohibitions on some forms of restraint used by the police.” Obama also spoke to the protesters directly, reminding them that this nation was founded on a protest called the American Revolution.

May 31, 2020
Minneapolis, MN
After the violent attack by an unidentified truck driver against civilians marching in protest of the death of George Floyd on Interstate 35, demonstrators stand before the Minneapolis police and National Guard to demand equal rights and the end of police brutality.

Can we stay together amidst the conversation? Are we brave enough to be patient with each other and listen with our beating human hearts? Can we continue on the path of ending racial inequality as well as the legislature that nurtures it?
