This young threebar porcupine fish swam right up to me. Usually they are a bit shy and swim away. When it got close it realised I wasn’t that interesting and swam off. 😄

Cabbage Tree Bay has been at its best this week with goodviz and an incredible volume and diversity of marinelife. Cuttlefish breeding season has kicked in with some interactions between males and a new small green turtle 'Manuel' has made an appearance. There are 3 turtles in the bay at present - Billie, Basil and Manuel.

I’ve opened a second trip to Timor Leste for Nov next year (2027) (first trip is now fully booked).
It was so much fun in Timor Leste last year I can’t wait to go back! We swum with a blue whale, s***m whales and dived the most biodiverse coral reef site in the world. The Timorese people are super friendly, very affordable destination, and it's only an hour flight from Darwin.
Don’t dive yet? We snorkel with the whales and there's plenty of time to learn to dive.

Hope you can come along - Pete

What an inspirational life Sir David Attenborough has led. Humanity is forever indebted to you for what you have done to share the wonders of our natural world, for us to enjoy and to protect.

Thank you Sir David and a very happy 100th birthday.

And if your yet to watch the documentary "Ocean" that was released last year - absolutely check it out.

On Thursday I dived North Bondi with buddies Jereon van Meenen and Scott Joseph. We used underwater scooters for transport, allowing us to explore large areas of the reef surrounding the headland. The aim was to locate weedy seadragons. This site has historically been a place where weedy seadragons are found. However since the large storms on 2022 few have been sighted. Last year, diving off the URG boat we managed to locate 4. Hopes were high that we would again find a number (perhaps >4) as we searched an expanded search area. Disappointingly none were found. Are there still seadragons there? It's possible there are and we just missed the area they are in. On the positive side, this is a very interesting dive site, with abundent sponge covered boulders and large schools of fish. This is the short video taken by Jeroen. I hope you enjoy the scenery.

Very pleased to be awarded runner up in the Humanity v Nature category in Environmental Photographer Awards 2026. This competition recognises photographers that raise awareness about the protection of the environment. My photo titled Conservation vs Tourism depicts whale sharks and humans interacting in Oslob, Philippines. The whale sharks are wild, but are fed and attracted to the area. While this changes the behaviour and normal migration of the sharks, it also provides an economic value on the sharks (greater than being killed for shark fins/food), and economic benefit for local people.

Was lucky to run into this fever of cownose rays at Nth Avalon this morning. Wonderful watching them circle me a number of times before zooming off.

Last night I was honoured to attend and briefly present (along with others) at an event to support seadragon science and conservation along with scientists from UTS and other citizen scientists. It was a wonderful occassion organised by the UTS Fish Ecology Lab and Seadragons of Sydney project, held in Sealife Sanctuary in Sydney. Our knowledge of these unique and amazing Australian animals is developing but there is a long way to go. Changing ocean conditions are creating challenges for their long-term health. There are many people and organisations (including many citizen scientists) along with those in attendance, who are contributing to our seadragon knowledge. I attended on behalf of the Underwater Research Group as their seadragon champion. There have been many people who have contributed much more than i ever will (and continue to do so) to building the collective knowledge of our seadragons. The images in this post show some of the scientists, sponsors and citizens involved in the UTS sponsored project. I also want to mention the Seadragon Search database and iNaturalist database which allow citizen scientists to contribute so much.
If you dont know much about weedy seadragons, or have never seen one, then Sealife Sanctuary will in coming months have a few (captive bred) seadragons on display. A great opportunity for non-scuba divers to see these incredible animals. Keep you eyes open for this and I'll post somthing as well when the time comes.
cheers Pete

Always enjoy diving at my favourite local dive site - Cabbage Tree Bay Aquatic Reserve. Conditions where good during the week. Local celebrity turtle, Basil swam right up to me (and kept going) at CTB. He/she was on a mission to get to the seagrass meadow for a feed, and i was simply on route. Still a wonderful experience.

Enjoy nature - Pete
