Every year on August 20, Hungary commemorates the establishment of its state and its more than 1,000-year history. The celebration honours King Saint Stephen, Hungary’s first king, who was instrumental in founding the nation. Born Vajk, Stephen was the first in his family to embrace Christianity. After succeeding his father, Grand Prince Géza, Stephen faced a conflict with his pagan relative Koppány over the throne, representing a broader struggle between Christianity and paganism.

Stephen ultimately defeated Koppány, solidifying his rule and establishing the Kingdom of Hungary in either late 1000 or early 1001. He continued to strengthen the nation by converting the Magyars to Christianity and unifying the Carpathian Basin while defending the kingdom from external threats.

King Stephen died on August 15, 1038, and was later canonized on August 20, 1083, along with his son Imre, by Pope Gregory VII. This day became a national and religious holiday, celebrating both Hungary’s statehood and its Christian heritage. Under Queen Maria Theresa in 1771, the day was established as a national holiday. However, during communist rule from 1945 to 1990, the celebration was secularized and renamed Constitution Day, marking the foundation of the communist regime.

Today, August 20 once again honours Szent István Nap and the founding of the Hungarian State over a millennium ago.
