Sticna monastery
The Cistercian monastery (the only still operating Cistercian monastery in Slovenia) is located in the village of Stična was built in 1136 by Peregrin I, the then patriarch of Aquilea. It is known as a major cultural centres and for the so called Stična Manuscripts (Stiški rokopisi), a famous series of illuminated medieval manuscripts written by Cistercian monks.
The earliest part of the monastery is the cloister and the monastic church, the ensemble is a mixture of different architectural styles from early Romanesque and Gothic to Renaissance and Baroque.
In 1784 the monastery was abolished following the Josephine reforms. The White Monks returned to Stična in 1898 after 114 years away. During the Second World War, the Partisans use the abbey as a prison for priests that they had captured.During the Second World War, the Partisans use the abbey as a prison for priests that they had captured.
The monastery now houses the Slovenian Museum of Religion.
