Predjama castle, Slovenia

Predjama is one of the most unique castles in the world, built in the mouth of a large cave complex in southwest Slovenia, within the historical region of Inner Carniola, near the city of Postojna. It appears first in written records from 1274 with the name Luegg, when it was built by the abbots of Aquileia and was given a Gothic appearance. The current visible site of the castle is dating from 1570 as renaissance building.

Set halfway up a 123-meter vertical cliff face almost 800 years ago, the castle is listed by Guinness World Records as the world's largest cave castle. Predjama Castle is considered to be the only fully preserved cave castle in Europe, the cave itself is the second longest tourist cave in Slovenia.

The legend of local knight Erazem Predjamski from the Luegg family, states that the castle and the knight, after a dispute with Habsburg emperor Frederick III, successfully resisted the besiegers of the castle for more than a year, until one of his servants betrayed him by lighting a candle in the window of Erazem’s room. This led the Habsburg besiegers killed him by a shot from a cannon in his lavatory..

After the siege and destruction of the original castle, In 1511 the second castle, freshly built by the Purgstall family, was destroyed in an earthquake. In 1567, Archduke Charles of Austria leased the castle to Baron Philipp von Cobenzl, who paid it off after 20 years and constructed in 1570 the currently visible Renaissance castle. During the 18th century, it became one of the favourite summer residences of the Cobenzl family. In 1846 it was sold to the Windischgrätz family, who remained its owners until the end of World War II, when it was confiscated and nationalized by the Yugoslav Communist authorities

Lemberg Castle is situated on a rock formation above the village of Lemberg pri novi Cerkvi. The area is part of the traditional region of Styria. The first written reference the castle is from a 1213 document, in which the witness is Eberhard of Lemberg (Leuburch).
The castle was owned by lords of Ptuj from 1271, until the family’s extinction in 1438. It passed to the lords of Schaunberg, the castle was destroyed in 1452 by Frederic II of Celje. Ulrich Schaunberg has rebuilt the castle and mortgaged it to Andrej Hohenwarten in 1463 who bougth it in 1487.
The castle had several owners during the next centuries, in 1584 it was remodeled by Viktor Welzer in Renaissance style, extended with large round towers. The castle underwent in the 19th century a classicist reconstruction. The floor plan remains medieval, but only the cellars under the northern tract remain from the original castle.
In 2007, it was bought by the current owner, historian and geographer Franci Zidar who is involved in the ongoing reconstruction.

Church of Holy Trinity, Hrastovlje

The romanesque church was probably constructed in the 12th century.
The church is fortified by a wall strengthened with two towers that the local population built to protect itself from Turkish-Ottoman attacks in the 16th century.
The northwestern entrance to the church, dates back to around 1776. The original entrance was probably next to the bell-tower.
The inside of the three-nave romanesque church with a barrel vault and high bell tower is decorated with Gothic paintings from 1490 and Glagolitic inscriptions. The frescoes depict the creation of the world, expulsion of Adam and Eve from the garden of Eden, scenes from the suffering of Jesus, work of farmers in various seasons and the famous Dance of Death.

Ptuj Castle

The castle slope was settled already in the 5th millennium BC. Inhabitants of antique Poetovio had a fortress and temples established.
The current castle, next to the River Drava was built in the 11th century, owned by the archdiocese of Salzburg. Archbishops leased the castle to the Lords of Ptuj who, during 300 years of their tenure, founded the Dominican and Minorite monasteries, and built a pilgrims’ church on Ptujska Gora.
Being modified several times, the current form was completed in the 17th century. During the ottoman wars, the surrounding has been several times raided, but the castle has never been taken.

In 1656, the castle was bought by the Holy Roman Field Marshal Walter Leslie, the following counts Leslie owned the castle as rural residence. After After the extinction of the Leslie family in 1802 and their relatives, it was bought in 1873 by Countess Therese von Herberstein: the counts Herberstein, had it in their possession till 1945 when it was nationalised by the newly formed communist Yougoslavia. Soteska castle, Slovenia

The current castle with four corner towers and a special entrance tower, was built from 1664 to 1689 on the site of a ruined tower from the 15th century by the count Gallenberg. It was considered as one of the most beautiful castles in the Carniola (Kranjska) region.
The castle was sold to the Auerspergs in 1733, and then to the Counts of Lichtenberg in 1743. The Auerspergs reacquired the castle in 1793 and owned it until the Second World War.

Soteska Castle (one time even contained a brewery) was burned down by the Partisan guerillas in 1943 during World War II, although the garden pavillion named Devil’s Tower was spared. The Tower (Hudičev turn) internal walls are covered by 17th century frescoes that feature magical trompe-l'œil illusions.
Today, only the ruins of the castle remain visible as after the war many of the building stones were carried off.
