Paying tribute to a Cold War icon — the AvantGarde Model Kits No. 88009 is a meticulously detailed 1/48 scale replica of the legendary F-14D BuNo. 158985, faithfully capturing the look and spirit of this naval powerhouse.

This particular aircraft served with the VF-2 “Bounty Hunters” and proudly wore the NK-100 markings. Delivered in 1973 and bearing construction number 46, this Super Tomcat served aboard the USS Enterprise and NAS Miramar, and made appearances at stations like NAS Norfolk, NAS Fallon, NAF Atsugi (Japan), and more — playing a critical role in showcasing the capabilities of U.S. naval air power throughout the 70s and 80s.

After decades of service, the aircraft was decommissioned on March 31st, 1992. Thankfully, its story didn’t end there. Today, you can find this iconic bird preserved in Hangar 2 at the Yanks Air Museum Museum in Chino, California, where it stands as a proud testament to the VF-2 squadron and the era it helped define.

The AMK kit (No. 88009) is more than just a model — it’s a chance to relive aviation history. With crisp molding, precise parts, and updated decals (2021 release), it offers builders a chance to bring the legacy of the F-14D back to life on their workbenches.

This is the Sukhoi Su-30MKI — the pride of the Indian Air Force’s No. 220 Squadron, the „Desert Tigers.“

The Su-30MKI was a highly advanced multirole fighter, derived from the legendary Su-27 Flanker. It was built under license by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited in India, making it a true multinational hybrid — a Russian airframe combined with Indian, French, and Israeli avionics and systems.

With thrust-vectoring engines, long-range strike capability, and exceptional maneuverability, it became the backbone of the Indian Air Force — and one of the most capable Flanker variants ever built.

The jet I recreated is SB220, from No. 220 Squadron. It was photographed during a historic exercise — the very first joint fighter training between the Indian Air Force and the Japan Air Self-Defense Force.

For this build, I used Great Wall Hobby’s 1:48 scale kit. It featured newly tooled parts specific to the Indian variant, and included the BrahMos cruise missile — one of the most powerful air-launched weapons in service today.

It’s widely regarded as one of the best Flanker kits available in any scale, and I think it made the perfect platform for bringing this iconic jet to life.

My work is done here! The mighty Sukhoi Su-30MKI “Flanker-H” of the Indian Air Force’s No. 220 Squadron “Desert Tigers.”

The Su-30MKI is a highly advanced multirole fighter derived from the legendary Su-27 Flanker. Designed by Sukhoi and later produced under license by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in India, it combines Russian airframe technology with Indian, French, and Israeli systems. Equipped with thrust-vectoring engines, long-range strike capability, and exceptional maneuverability, it has become the backbone of the Indian Air Force and one of the most capable Flanker variants ever built.

The aircraft I am recreating is SB220 from No. 220 Squadron, photographed during Exercise Veer Guardian 2023 at Hyakuri Air Base, Japan. The exercise marked the first fighter training event between the Indian Air Force and the Japan Air Self-Defense Force.

For this build, I’m using Great Wall Hobby’s 1:48 scale Su-30MKI kit (L4826), released in 2023. The kit features newly tooled parts specific to the Indian variant and includes the impressive BrahMos cruise missile, one of the most powerful air-launched weapons currently in service. Widely regarded as one of the finest Flanker kits available in any scale, it provides an outstanding platform for recreating this iconic aircraft.
