Once believed to be a safe haven for marine life, the Red Sea faced a harsh reality check during an intense heatwave in 2023. A new paper states that this thermal event bleached sea anemones and nearly wiped out their famous residents, destroying over 94 percent of the area’s clownfish population. While these resilient species were once thought to thrive in this area, experts believe this may have been a tipping point that could spell trouble for reefs around the world.

"Only focusing on optimism is like telling a cancer patient that everything will be OK if they just stay positive. At best, it comes across as out of touch; at worst, it feels callous. Yes, we can still prevent the worst impacts and must demand our governments scale solutions and act urgently, but we cannot minimize the horrors unfolding now, or that it will get worse in the coming years"

The hurricane leveled Asheville and other towns in western North Carolina. The push for optimism about our climate future rings hollow right now.

I support a ban on non reef safe sunscreens in Roatán and anywhere there are coral reefs. Oxybenzone, the main ingredient in non reef safe sunscreens, is highly toxic to corals. As little as one drop in an Olympic sized swimming pool is enough to cause coral death.
