Before you hire a cinematographer for your low budget short film, you should ask them one question. How would you shoot this scene with in my budget?

I have seen it plenty of times where productions gets stuck for years, because the DOP designed shots with equipment, location or setups that the production simply cannot afford.

And instead of finding a cheaper solution, the film gets delayed indefinitely.

For example if you need an infinity black background, you don't necessarily need an expensive studio for just the few shots. While you can literally just go outside at night and film it where its naturally dark.

A cinematographer isn't there just to make your film look good They should also help you figure out how to actually make your film with in your budget.

There is no such thing as Superhero Fatigue, only bad films fatigue. As a Superhero film is just an action film and they have always done well. In action films you can also have a hero protagonist with super powers, super skills or super gadgets.

While there is bad film fatigue, as we have seen more quality social media videos and people can easily judge if a movie is good or not. While also with streaming available, if a movie isn't that interestjng too watch people would rather wait for it to get on a streaming service to watch then to watch it in the cinema.

If you can't afford to film on 35mm film, the next best thing you can do is an analog intermediate, also alled a FimOut or DFD which stands for Digital to Film to Digital.

You basically film it digitally first and edit a picture lock and send it to a company that does this.
They laser your digital footage onto film stock and scans it back to digital. The cost is far compared to filming on actual 35mm film stock.

Cost
2min minimal for $1300
aditional minutes $600

For a 10 minute short film be looking at $6100

Movies you can check out that done this is The Batman, Dune and Project Hai Mary.

So I wondered how much it would cost to film on actual film and looked up alk the prices and how many rolls you need.

Arrflex 435 $750
400ft Kodad Vision + develop + scan $500
15 roll x 15 = $7500
Scanned File Prores 4444 is 670gb per day
2x 1TB SSD = $400

With the price of the rolls alone could just buy a used Arri Amira. Personally I would rather just film on Arri Alexa Mini and allocate the money towards more important things.
