🚆 Today marks the 20th anniversary of the full opening of the Qinghai-Xizang Railway.

Before the opening of the Qinghai-Xizang Railway, Chogo, a photojournalist with Xinhua, took a photo in Damxung County on June 17, 2006. He captured herdswoman Pema Lhamo sitting with her daughter Nyima Lhamo as they watched the first train passing through the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

"I was three years old that year, but I will never forget the moment of seeing a train for the first time in my life," Nyima Lhamo recalled. At the age of 8, she fractured her hand and went with her family by train to Lhasa for medical treatment. In 2022, Nyima Lhamo took a train to Jiangsu Province in east China for further studies. Now, she works as a patient guide at a hospital back in Damxung.

Chogo's photo bears witness to Nyima Lhamo's growth and the profound changes the Qinghai-Xizang Railway has brought to the plateau over the past 20 years. The railway has resolved the long-standing difficulties of traveling out of Xizang and accessing education outside the region. Quality educational resources and medical services also flow into the plateau through the Qinghai-Xizang Railway.

A grand gala was held in Nagqu, southwest China's Autonomous Region. The event included performances by delegations from cities and prefectures across Xizang, followed by a spectacular mass Guozhuang dance featuring 1,105 performers. Professional artists, folk dance groups and Guozhuang enthusiasts came together to celebrate the region's rich .

For 20 years, a railway protection team has worked along the Qinghai-Xizang Railway in Nagqu, one of the world’s highest-altitude railway regions.

Patrolling tracks, preventing hazards, assisting with emergency response, and even helping local herders during busy seasons, they have endured thin air, freezing temperatures and harsh weather to help keep the railway running safely.

From living in tents to modern facilities with water, electricity and heating, much has changed over the years. What remains unchanged is their dedication to safeguarding one of China’s most remarkable railways.

Since opening in 2006, Lhasa Railway Station — one of the highest major railway stations in the world — has served as a key gateway on the Qinghai-Xizang Railway, connecting the plateau with the rest of China for 20 Years.

Up to now, it has cumulatively handled 63.62 million passenger arrivals and departures in total.
