To me, imagination is an essential part of my urban photographic exploration where I look for visual metaphors in the conversations between natural & man-made elements in different scales- e.g. can you see the micro natures in Seijun Nishihata‘s “Yamizo Stone” and Ikuya Sagara’s “Floating Tree House” in ?

Happy to be a part of ’s campaign to share my view on “Sustainable Travel” from - at this moment when travel restarting! To me, there's no doubt that “Sustainable Travel” should cover more than just environmental concerns. The idea should also be about understanding the unique culture of a place & everyday life of people, and be part of the process in strengthening such attractiveness of the place.

As an example, I discovered in an architectural photo documentation project last year that there are very sustainable ideas behind brutalist style buildings from the 60-80s. These buildings used raw materials without excessive decoration. The reason behind this dated back to the vision of a post-war period to build fast in an economical, basic and honest way. These have all been very interesting findings beyond their visuals, and have a lot of contextual clues to the characteristics, culture, and history of the pre-golden period of Hong Kong. All photos for this campaign were captured with a certain abstraction to trigger curiosity in exploring such hidden sustainable styles & unknown history that once existed but are being valued again today when building heritage is becoming a top sustainable topic in both Hong Kong and around the world.

Do visit the campaign’s photo exhibition this coming week to learn more about the story behind each of my photos on this topic:

The Chinese Bank Building at 61-65 Des Voeux Rd was completed in 1966, designed by Chau Lu-Nin and Richard Lee (Chau & Lee Architects & Engineers), HK-Chinese architectural firm who designed a lot of buildings in HK since 30s (such as Kowloon Flour Mills & HKSKH St. Mary's Church). The exposed concrete facade caught my attention to snap these few photos and digging out of its architectural history. Full info in Chinese description.

, one of the most important masterpieces in modern architecture history, was planned to be demolished a while ago- yet good news was announced this month that the building would be taken down unit by unit. They would be refurbished with the help of crowdfunding, and be donated to museums all over the world - perhaps that’s a good way for architects & general public to be the stakeholders of architectural conservation projects?
