Biggest gecko in Hong Kong ⬇️
The Reeves's Tokay gecko (Gekko reevesii) is a large nocturnal gecko. Together with its friends Tokay gecko actually the biggest gecko in Hong Kong and some of the largest gecko in the world. They could grow to up to 30-40cm long. Most of the time you’ll see them on the outside walls of buildings near the countryside or out in the wild.
They could change color by lightening or darkening their skin to show their mood and environment. (But totally unlike how chameleons change color) Overall, they look bluish-gray with black and other colored spots.
🧬 Species Classification
Recently, studies from China showed the Reeves's Tokay gecko (Gekko reevesii) is actually a separate species from the Tokay geckos (Gekko gecko). The Reeves's one has more complex spots on its back while Tokay geckos usually has a bluish-gray background with orange and brown spots. (Have attached a comparison from my friend
♻️ Tail Dropping and Regrowth
A few years ago, I saw a gecko drop its tail and realized it’s not like in cartoons where the tail breaks off cleanly. Instead, the tail breaks off in a jagged, saw-tooth pattern. When the tail grows back, it’s smaller and the pattern doesn’t match the original. The vertebrae don’t grow back either. You can use X-rays to see if a gecko’s tail has regrown and how many times it has happened.
🛟 Protection in Hong Kong
Apart from Hong Kong wild, both tokay geckos could be seen in traditional Chinese medicine shops and in news. According to research from the University of Hong Kong, most of the geckos sold in Chinese medicine shops actually come from Southeast Asia, not from local wild populations. Still, there are occasional reports online about people illegally catching and selling wild geckos in Hong Kong. Because these geckos are protected by law here, have strong territorial instincts and powerful bites, it’s best not to try to touch them at all.
💊 Tokay gecko in Chinese Medicine
The Tokay gecko is called "Gejie" in traditional Chinese medicine, while the smaller gecko is simply called "Gecko." Although they belong to the same family, they are used very differently in Chinese medicine. Gejie is considered a high-quality element mainly helps to strengthen the body, while Gecko is one of the "Five Poisons" (alongside scorpions, venomous snakes, centipedes and toads) used to reduce swelling and dissolve lumps.
