This is what one source exposure looked like before the final blend.

The sky was captured while the camera followed the stars. The foreground was photographed separately with the tracker off, then both parts were processed independently and combined into the finished nightscape.

How can darkness be so bright?

Maybe the night sky was never truly dark.

The Milky Way’s glow is the combined light of billions of distant stars, cut by vast lanes of dust. Most of that structure is too faint for our eyes, but not for the camera.

Toward the Galactic Centre lies a far less peaceful place: massive stars, star-forming clouds, supernova remnants and a supermassive black hole.

Violent beauty, seen from a very safe distance.

About 8,000 years ago, a massive star tore itself apart.

This is what remains.

Swipe through for the starless version and the complete processing workflow

The Cygnus Loop is an expanding supernova remnant approximately 2,000 light-years away. Its structure stretches roughly 110 light-years across and appears about six times wider than the full Moon in our sky.

The tangled filaments trace the shockwave still moving through interstellar gas—hydrogen glowing red and oxygen cyan. Not a quiet cloud, but the aftermath of a violent stellar death still carving through space.

With this one I explored some of the more advanced processing techniques, but in the end of the day the outcome can only be as good as the quality and quantity of photons collected. Still, a lot can be achieved with minimal gear.

Swipe for a closer look at the Galactic Core, the single tracked exposure, and the capture details behind the final photograph.

The red cast in the single exposure comes from the astro-modified camera. The foreground is blurred because the tracker was following the sky while Earth moved beneath it.

The final image combines four tracked sky exposures, a separate foreground exposure, and additional Hα and OIII data captured through the Optolong L-Ultimate.

I don't always get to "plan" the frame when it comes to exotic locations. I know I should, but I always get distracted by the view. It kind of frames itself so I dont have to.

The shoreline led straight to the rocks. The sea stayed calm. The Milky Way did the heavy lifting.

I just had to avoid screwing it up.

His Majesty, the Core.

The ancient Greeks could see the Milky Way—but if they had seen it like this, Mount Olympus might have had some serious competition.

Roughly 26,000 light-years away lies the Galactic Centre: a brutal cosmic foundry where stars are born, burn out and return their elements to space.

Carbon, oxygen and nitrogen—the raw materials of planets and life—are forged and scattered by generations of stars.

At its heart sits Sagittarius A*, a supermassive black hole around four million times the mass of the Sun.

Creation and destruction, sharing the same throne.

Violent beauty. Enough to make Zeus nervous.

Burning Embers diving.

Last shot of the night—and I nearly slept through it.

I spotted this composition earlier and saved it for last. Then I lay down under the stars and fell asleep like an idiot.

Somehow I woke up at exactly the right time, jumped up, set the tracker and got the shot before my brain had properly booted.

I wanted the reflection. Dry land wasn’t going to cut it.

So I walked barefoot into the water in the dark, carrying the camera and tracker on a tripod, with only my phone light to see where the hell I was stepping.

Stupid? Probably.

Not sure when I collected all the data but it was earlier this year. Shot with Canon Greece EOS R and RP cameras, Askar FMA180Pro f4.5, Move Shoot Move NOMAD star tracker, iOptron SkyGuider Pro, and Optolong Filter L-Ultimate dual-narrowband filter.
