Korsten Arts Welcome to this collection of images, inspired by nature and photographed by Scott and Marilyn Korsten.

We are Scott and Marilyn Korsten, a husband-and-wife team who blend our skills in digital photography to tell meaningful stories through visual art. Our teamwork approach developed over a long period of time. We were both avid documentary photographers before we met, and each carried a camera regularly. This shared interest was part of what brought us together and something that has continued throughout our time together. After leaving our traditional day-jobs, we began to explore the idea of working together to develop as visual artists, believing that a team approach would be a genuine strength. In the process we learned of Bernd and Hilla Becher, a German husband-and-wife team known for creating noteworthy photographs beginning in the late 1950’s. Their successful example of working together gives us confidence as a photographic arts team. A notable strength of our photographic work together comes from recognizing that we see subjects and scenes through a prism of understanding that is different from each other. We’ve learned that by being present together “in the moment” and allowing ourselves to talk though what each other notices—then acting on each other’s suggestions—the body of images created is more compelling. Ultimately, we hope our photography will inspire others to appreciate the beauty and wonder of our natural world, while also inspiring them to protect and preserve it for future generations.

“Maybe you have to know the darkness before you can appreciate the light.” – Madeline L’Engle

Perched on a dramatic cliff at the northern tip of Scotland's Isle of Skye, the ruins of Duntulm Castle stand exposed to the relentless forces of wind, sea, and time. Once a stronghold shaped by clan rivalry and violence, little remains but broken walls and the weight of its past. A long exposure rendered in stark black and white, the landscape becomes a witness to history—a place where human ambition has crumbled, but its shadows endure.

We visited Duntulm Castle during last week's National Park Photography Expeditions masterclass in Scotland. Built in the 14th and 15th centuries, then abandoned in 1732, this location has a dark history; but parts of the castle remain, providing an amazing visual presence yet today.

Just outside of Kanab, UT there is a parking lot...and from that lot, there is a trail which if followed will lead you to some very unique natural structures known as toadstools. On our recent National Park Photography Expeditions Masterclass we visited this area where the simple existence of toadstools is mesmerizing...how on earth are these able to stand? How are they possible??

This pair of images capture the same scene, but from different perspectives, and at different times as the sun was coming up for the day. Which perspective speaks to you more, the first as the sun was just breaking, or the second as it was becoming more prominent?

“When it is dark enough, you can see the stars.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

As we were getting ready for our recent National Park Photography Expeditions masterclass in the Arizona strip, one of the things we were most excited about was being in the presence of truly dark skies; something we don't get at our home just outside of Sioux Falls anymore.

We hoped we would have an opportunity to witness amazing views of the stars, and hopefully the milky way during our overnight camping trip to White Pocket in the Vermillion Cliffs National Monument area near Kanab, UT. And...it...was...spectacular!!! Seeing millions of stars really has a way of making you feel small, in a good way. The experience really put our place in the universe in perspective and revealed the collective responsibility we all have to protect these beautifully significant natural areas.

Enjoy these two images of the milky way and stars, our first attempt at night sky photography. They were captured on two different nights, at two different locations, and two different times of day.

With many thanks to Maddie and Bonnie from for taking great care of us and making this amazing experience possible.

A series of photographs captures the final 4x4 crossing of the week—an unusual desert stream transformed into a dramatic splash zone.

After exploring the remarkable landscapes near Kanab, Utah, during a National Park Photography Expeditions Masterclass in the Arizona Strip, our group faced one last obstacle: getting everyone—and all the vehicles—across a water-filled stretch of desert.

With the lead 4x4s already safely on the far side, the photographers spread out to document the final crossing from every angle. Elizabeth Lytle Photography captured video from one side, Deirdre Grimm Images set up on the other, Bob Killen Fine Art positioned a camera out front, and we photographed from inside the vehicle. Behind the wheel, Jeff Feekin charged through the water, while David Welch Photographic Arts and Ricky Workman Arts braced for spray coming from every direction.

The result is this action-packed series of images: one vehicle, one determined driver, and a spectacular wall of desert water.

It was so much fun reading the September/October issue of South Dakota Magazine and seeing the "Writers and Artists" page highlighting our "Payday in the Heartland | The Dance" exhibit currently showing at the Visual Art Center of the Washington Pavilion in Sioux Falls through the end of the year.

The September/October issue is a special arts and humanities edition done in collaboration with the South Dakota Humanities Council. Thank you for presenting our work and encouraging people to visit the exhibit!!

"Prairie Sunrise" is the title of this fine art image which was selected as part of Minnehaha Country Club's 3rd annual "Art Masters" exhibit in coordination with Piper Arts and the Washington Pavilion.

This curated exhibit supports regional artists in a couple of ways. First, by introducing the club's members to fresh, new pieces of relevant art each year. Second, by holding an annual auction (which occurs tonight) of the exhibited artworks. The whole concept is brilliant!! We are very proud of this piece and grateful for the opportunity to have had it on display for the past year.

To read more details behind the unique qualities of "Prairie Sunrise," read the comment below.

Somewhere in the middle of a cell-free zone in South Dakota, there's a small, but once bustling town that thrives no more. At its peak, there were 300 residents living in Capa, a picturesque, remote community that grew up along the railroad.

The Great Depression took its toll on the area, as did construction of a highway that took a different path.

By 1960, passenger trains no longer traveled through, starting a rural exodus in the area. The 1976 closing of the post office prompted most of the remaining residents away...all but one, Philip O’Connor, who lived in this home. A descendent of original settlers, he persevered longer than everyone else.

Now, there are only memories, along with remnants of a hotel, a few homes, a barn, the school and a church.

This particular morning presented an entirely ordinary scene as it was unfolding into something extraordinary.

Driving east on I-90 toward Worthington, MN the countryside was thick with fog, and the morning sun was just starting to burn through it. After turning north on Hwy 60, the morning glow was pierced by several objects beginning to appear in the distance near Brewster. It was the town's rural grain elevator and the railroad tracks that service it glistened in the morning glow...the scene was magical...

Today we are enjoying the harvest from seeds we planted earlier, as two images from our "Payday in the Heartland" series were accepted into the "Living Space" online global exhibition by Artdoc Photography Magazine. We love that this work, which is so meaningful to us, is proving to also be meaningful to others around the globe.

The images selected are in the comments below.
