"Local tradition suggests that the yellow church of the Panagia near Kardamili's waterfront occupies the site of an ancient sanctuary of the Nereids, the sea nymphs of Greek mythology. While the claim has not been conclusively verified by archaeology, it reflects the enduring connection between the town and the sea."

"The Castle of Zarnata stands upon the remains of a much older fortified settlement, generally identified with ancient Gerenia, one of the Roman-era Free Laconian cities. From this commanding hill the inhabitants controlled the northern approaches to Mani for more than two thousand years." The fortified walls can clearly be seen on the drive outnof Kambos toward Stavropigio in Mani.
