Starry Encounters (4K)
“Starry Encounters” was shot entirely on the second highest peak of the Mount Helmos (Aroania), Neridorachi, in North Peloponnese, at an altitude of 2,340m. Even though it was summer, the temperature at night fluctuated between 10-12 degrees Celsius and with a “Real Feel” temperature possibly below 10 degrees Celsius because of the relative humidity and the wind speed. This is one of the darkest districts of Greece, but also Europe's, due to the extreme low levels of light pollution.
Therefore, the Observatory of Helmos couldn't be anywhere else. Having the reflecting telescope "Aristarchos" installed, which belongs to the National Observatory of Athens, makes it the largest in the Balkans and the second largest in continental Europe.
Apart from the stars, the constellations, the airplane light trails and the Milky Way Galaxy, you will notice the movement of different objects in the night sky. These objects can be either artificial satellites or small meteors which are very difficult to observe within the large urban areas due to the intense artificial light.
Unfortunately, according to recent studies, the artificial light is contributing to an alarming rise in light pollution worldwide, affecting human health, nature, economy and scientific research.

Τα πλάνα που χρησιμοποίησα για το “Starry Encounters” γυρίστηκαν εξ ολοκλήρου στη δεύτερη ψηλότερη κορυφή του όρους Χελμός (Αροάνια), τη Νεραϊδόραχη, στη Βόρεια Πελοπόννησο και σε υψόμετρο 2340 μέτρων. Παρότι καλοκαίρι, η θερμοκρασία τις νύχτες κυμαινόταν μεταξύ 10-12 βαθμών Κελσίου και με αισθητή θερμοκρασία πιθανότατα κάτω των 10 βαθμών λόγω της σχετικής υγρασίας και της ταχύτητας του ανέμου. Η περιοχή είναι μία από τις πιο σκοτεινές περιοχές στην Ελλάδα και την Ευρώπη λόγω της πάρα πολύ χαμηλής φωτορύπανσης.
Εκεί βρίσκεται και το Αστεροσκοπείο Χελμού στο οποίο είναι εγκατεστημένο το κατοπτρικό τηλεσκόπιο Αρίσταρχος. Το τηλεσκόπιο ανήκει στο Εθνικό Αστεροσκοπείο Αθηνών και είναι το μεγαλύτερο των Βαλκανίων και το δεύτερο μεγαλύτερο της Ηπειρωτικής Ευρώπης.
Σε αυτό το ολιγόλεπτο βίντεο, εκτός από τα αστέρια, τους διάφορους αστερισμούς, τα ίχνη από τα φώτα των αεροπλάνων και τον Γαλαξία μας (Milky Way), θα παρατηρήσετε σε γρήγορο χρόνο και την κίνηση διάφορων ουράνιων αντικειμένων. Τα αντικείμενα αυτά είναι είτε τεχνητοί δορυφόροι είτε κάποια μικρά μετέωρα τα οποία είναι πολύ δύσκολο να παρατηρηθούν μέσα από τις μεγάλες αστικές περιοχές λόγω του υπερβολικού τεχνητού φωτισμού.
Δυστυχώς σύμφωνα με νέες μελέτες, η φωτορύπανση που οφείλεται κυρίως στον υπερβολικό και λανθασμένο τεχνητό φωτισμό, αυξάνεται ραγδαία σε παγκόσμια κλίμακα, με αρνητικές επιπτώσεις στην υγεία, τη φύση, την οικονομία και την επιστήμη.
