A photograph is not finished just because it exists on a screen.

This is something I have been thinking about for a long time, and it became the centre of my new film from Chios.

I travelled to the island for the opening of Caryatis Delta | Chios at the Chios Mastic Museum, an exhibition organised by the Piraeus Group Cultural Foundation.

But the film is not really about an opening night.

It is about taking one of my photographs back to the place where it was made.

The photograph was created in Pyrgi in 2021, in front of one of the village’s geometric walls. Before the exhibition opened, I returned to that same wall — this time with the image already printed, framed and ready to enter the museum.

For me, something changes when a photograph becomes physical.

Paper.
Scale.
Surface.
Frame.
Weight.

Inside an exhibition, the image is no longer protected by the screen. It has to live with the room, the light, the other photographs, and the people who stand in front of it.

That is where the work becomes real to me.

Can a digital image be a complete photograph, or does something essential happen when it becomes physical?

Caryatis moves on \ CARYATIS delta, Chios

✨«Καρυάτις Δ | Χίος» | ΝΕΑ ΕΚΘΕΣΗ

Την Τετάρτη 15 Ιουλίου, στις 20:00, σας περιμένουμε στο Μουσείο Μαστίχας Χίου για τα εγκαίνια της περιοδικής έκθεσης φωτογραφίας «Καρυάτις Δ | Χίος».

Τριάντα έξι ασπρόμαυρα φωτογραφικά έργα του Georgios Tatakis αποτυπώνουν γυναίκες διαφορετικών γενεών με παραδοσιακές ενδυμασίες της Χίου, σε τοπία, οικισμούς και ιστορικά κτίσματα του νησιού.

Μια εικαστική αφήγηση που συμπυκνώνει παρελθόν, παρόν και μέλλον, αναδεικνύοντας τη σχέση ανθρώπου, ενδυμασίας και τόπου.

«Δεν έχω συναντήσει στις εξορμήσεις μου άλλον τόπο με τέτοια ποικιλία παραδοσιακών φορεσιών», σημειώνει ο φωτογράφος, ο οποίος κατέγραψε ενδυμασίες από είκοσι ένα χωριά της Χίου.

Η έκθεση φιλοξενείται στο Μουσείο Μαστίχας Χίου, που φέτος συμπληρώνει δέκα χρόνια λειτουργίας, και εντάσσεται στη σειρά «Καρυάτις», που έχει τιμηθεί με είκοσι τέσσερα διεθνή βραβεία.

Controversial opinion:

The public is right to distrust a lot of contemporary art.

Yes, really.

There is plenty of work hiding behind pretentious explanations, where confusion is mistaken for intelligence and obscurity for depth.

But the public’s favourite response is still a terrible argument:

“I could do that.”

Could you?

A child can draw a square.

A drunk man can spill paint.

AI can generate endless abstract images in seconds.

That proves nothing.

Art is not a competition of visible effort.

Some technically astonishing works are completely lifeless.

Some brutally simple works changed art history.

The real question is not:

“Could I make something that looks like this?”

It’s:

“Could I have arrived there out of necessity?”

That’s where the conversation becomes uncomfortable.

Architecture is not only about walls, materials, furniture, and light. It is also about atmosphere.

This is one reason why black-and-white photography can work particularly well inside hotels, offices, restaurants, and professional interiors. It allows the artwork to support the space through form, rhythm, shadow, and structure rather than competing through colour.

I recently wrote a new article exploring the relationship between photography and architectural spaces, and why restrained photographic work often integrates more naturally into hospitality and professional environments.
