At Buta Visual Agency, it is our practice to let the people whose stories we document watch their recordings before we leave the community. Their satisfaction and confidence in how their stories are represented matter to us.
Just after completing a documentary recording session in Savelugu, we took a moment to share the footage with the beneficiaries who participated in the production. For many, it was an opportunity to see their own experiences, voices, and perspectives documented and preserved through visual storytelling.

At Buta Visual Agency, we believe the impact of a documentary begins long before it is published.

THE MOST MISERABLE CREATURES ON EARTH

Domesticated chickens and cattle may well be an evolutionary success story, but they are also among the most miserable creatures that ever lived.
Today, while capturing preparations for tomorrow’s worldwide Eid celebrations in Tamale, Ghana, I visited a cattle market and reflected on a chapter from Yuval Noah Harari’s Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind.
For thousands of years, cattle have been deeply connected to human survival, culture, faith, and celebration.
Ten thousand years ago, only a few million sheep, cattle, goats, boars, and chickens lived in restricted Afro-Asian niches.

Today, the world contains about a billion sheep, a billion pigs, more than a billion cattle, and over 25 billion chickens.

A fellow student looks on with curiosity as his colleague captures a moment through the lens, a shared experience of learning, discovery, and the power of visual storytelling. This moment was captured during a recent training at the Wa School for the Deaf, one of three schools in Northern Ghana where Foto4Change is currently working, reaching close to 50 participants who are actively engaged in the program.
These students are gradually becoming their school’s visual journalists, documenting, promoting, and archiving everyday activities within their environment. Through this process, they are not only learning photography but also developing the confidence and skills to tell their own stories in powerful and creative ways.
At Foto4Change, we believe that when children are actively involved in photography, they don’t just learn how to use a camera, they begin to see the world differently, think creatively, and find their own voice. Through this engagement, we nurture their natural curiosity and transform it into creative expression and future opportunity. Every moment of participation is a step toward building confidence, storytelling ability, and the potential to produce meaningful visual work that can inspire change within their communities and beyond.

📍 Kumbungu District, Northern Region, Ghana.

This morning, Buta Visual Agency is on the ground in Kumbungu supporting the visual documentation and amplification of United States Government efforts in malaria elimination through the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) Evolve Project in Ghana.
we are capturing powerful stories and images from the Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) campaign highlighting frontline health workers, community engagement, household protection, and the collective effort to reduce malaria across Northern Ghana.
Through documentary photography and visual storytelling, we continue to use images to amplify impact, partnerships, and public health interventions that protect lives and strengthen communities.
