Insecurity makes people defensive and so protective.
Cowards can be dangerous; they can go far by trying to harm what they fear or get rid of it.
So it's not surprising you find religious groups attack people who they think speak against their belief.
They attack these people because they fear them. They think what they say about their faith and belief can cause them to lose 'souls' and therefore, they tends to get rid of them.
In my opinion, if your faith is criticised, insulted or questioned in a way you abhors, you stand your grounds and show those who do all the above that you're good religious group by showing them kindness.
You're a coward if you attack.
