It looks like a forgotten Lost Place swallowed by the Loire, but the truth behind this mysterious house is even more fascinating: “La Maison dans la Loire” is not an abandoned home and not the result of a flood. Created in 2007 as part of the Estuaire Nantes–Saint-Nazaire contemporary art project, this public art installation was designed by artist Jean-Luc Courcoult as a surreal dialogue between architecture and nature. The house is a life-sized replica of a former riverside inn from the nearby village of Lavau-sur-Loire, intentionally placed in the river to create the illusion of a forgotten place slowly reclaimed by water. Its abandoned appearance, melancholic atmosphere and Lost Place aesthetic are all part of the artwork’s concept - a poetic reflection on memory, time and the fragile relationship between humans and nature.
