These two lovely people are my grandparents. Whenever I go back to Georgia, I also visit them. When my granddad sees me with the camera, he smiles and asks me if this is because I want to capture our last meeting. My grandma, on the other hand, tells endless stories about her youth and, later, when I was a baby, spending time with them. They are indeed one of the most precious people in my life.

She always tried to fit in and support everyone around her. Now she tells her stories ober and over, trying to grab on the past sparks of her life.

ANANURI, A CASTLE COMPLEX situated along the Aragvi River, is a great example of Georgia’s unique architectural blend. A home to the Aragvi feudal dynasty during the 18th century, it was the staging grounds of numerous battles that Georgians fought.

The fortress dates to the 17th century. It witnessed centuries of battles, the massacre of the Aragvi clan, numerous peasant revolts, and bloodshed. Having surviving centuries of turmoil, the complex lost its function in the 19th century.

The complex holds two castles joined by a curtain wall constructed as a defense and three churches. The largest, central one stands out with its rich facade decorations and frescoes. The fortress also has a secret tunnel connecting to the river, as well as auxiliary chambers.

The importance of the complex was conditioned by the fact that it was located on the road that was connecting the South to the North and was a major route through the Caucasus from Georgia to Russia.
