Some photos from the excellent Edinburgh Tattoo last Monday (24th August). Photography was quite tricky there; trying to avoid getting peoples heads in the shot, while not getting in the way of others sitting behind me, or distracting those next to me. I didn't get any complaints, so I guess I succeeded. :)

They really don't do the event justice, but they are being shown tomorrow (31st) at 8pm on BBC 1.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Worthing Lion’s Firework Display last Saturday; it was fantastic, as usual, from Selstar Fireworks.

These are a few of the photos from the evening.

These shots are from the third day of the Arundel International Tournament held each year at Arundel Castle. These are from the hunting skills competition, and allows participation from squires and ladies alongside the competing knights.

I don't consider myself as much of a portrait photographer, but I really couldn't resist catching candid shots of the contestants and helpers. :)

I can't recommend this event enough for a great day out. :)

I went back to the Arundel International Tournament held at Arundel Castle yesterday, and had a great time as usual.

These shots are from when the gates open to allow the public in, and I also tried my hand at photographing the falconry display from Hawking About, admittedly with mixed results.

I highly recommend the event, which is a real competition and not a rehearsed/staged event. :)

My final post of the day from the first day of the Arundel International Tournament, although I am going back again tomorrow.

Probably the highlights of the day are the jousts themselves. The knights are allocated the horses by lot rather than use their own, so the competition is also about riding skills in addition to the combat element.

Scoring is;
Head = 3 points
Targe (shield) = 3 points
Body = 2 points
Arm = 1 point

A bonus point is also awarded if the lance is sufficiently broken, and an extra point can also be awarded for horsemanship.

Part two of the first day at the Arundel International Tournament included a test of impressive riding skills, and photos of other squires and ladies who help make the whole thing possible.

I also recommend taking time out to check the various crafts stands as well. One of my favourites is the medieval cooking and the blacksmithing. Everyone is so friendly, so don't be afraid to ask questions. There's also participation stalls such as archery, crossbow shooting, and axe throwing to try. :)

I had a great day at the Arundel International Tournament photographing the jousts and all the peripheral activities. These shots are from when the gates open for the day, while musicians and a juggler entertain old and young alike while we were queueing for entry.

More from the horse riding skills and jousting to follow soon. 🙂
