Hey all, how are you? Sorry its been so long. How long exactly? I don't know, but a while.

Life's been super busy as of late. I know that everyone is feeling that at the moment. I can't remember a time in my life that's been as busy as it is right now. There's so much going on in the world, sadly it's predominantly bad. I stopped using social media for a long time and stopped reading the news. Just to focus more on the things around me and things that I could actually change.

I've still been going out and taking a LOT of photos but stopped posting for a while. I'm not sure exactly why. I guess I was in a constant battle of why am I posting this stuff online? Am I doing it for self gratification? Was it a distraction from day to day life? I'm still not sure.

All I know is that people around me have been asking "why did I stop posting?" I genuinely didn't think that people actually took the time to read and look at these posts. It makes my heart so happy to hear that people around me actually miss seeing my posts. That they enjoy the stories, the pictures, where I went, the geeky info.

Last night a friend of mine said that his wife really missed seeing my posts and I told him I would break the radio silence and post today, so Alex, here we go.

Thank you all so much for all your comments. I guess I've got some making up to do so I'll post as often as I can.

Mike xx

Riddle me this…

My wife and I saw in 2022 with a long walk along the Ramsgate/Broadstairs coastal path. Amongst the breadth of bird life, we were amazed to see the sheer number of Ring Necked Parakeets. Native to the Orient and North Afrotropical regions they are nonindigenous to the UK which raises a few questions over their allowance to breed and thrive in this country.

Reports of their introduction go back as far as 1855 however, it is believed that widespread breeding did not occur until 1969. In 1983 they were added to the BOU British List and after nearly 50 years we now have a recorded 8600 pairs (although the true number is most likely higher than this)

These colourful and noisy birds are certainly not part of our avifauna and as such do pose concerns for Woodpeckers, Nuthatches, Starlings even T**s as they breed a lot earlier in the year and occupy ideal nesting/breeding holes in trees.

Landowners have since been given the right to dispatch of these birds without any specific reason or prior permission and back in January of 2021 is it believed that DEFRA were in discussions to cull the population should they migrate further afield.

So, what are your thoughts? Abolish or avian atonement? Afterall, we were the ones that took them away from their natural habitat, caged them and allowed them to breed in another country.

After a busy festive week, I finally managed to get out yesterday on a long walk around Woods Mill, albeit in the rain πŸ“·πŸŒ§οΈπŸ¦

I love how rain transforms an image and gives it another level of detail in the feathers.

This Nuthatch was happy as Larry on this mossy log and posed long enough for me to drop my shutter right down to capture some of the rain! More to follow including my first Marsh Tit.

Got myself a little mate at Woods Mill now.... He follows me everywhere! πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ¦πŸŒ²

I've definitely found my new favourite spot for setting up perches!

In the space of 2 hours I saw Blue t**s, Great t**s, Nuthatch, Greenfinch, Chaffinch, Robins, Blackbirds, Jays, Woodpeckers, Doves, Coal t**s, Goldcrest and a very hard to recognise small brown passerine looking bird that had oddly dark marks on it's chest with a light cap on its head....? πŸ€”πŸ€” Ideas??

Stunning walk yesterday around Rye Harbour. It was the calm after the storm and the redshank were pottering around all the pools made from the rain.

There are some great hides down there that allowed me to get this shot. If you haven't already, get yourself down there for a walk!

For Alison. Who over the last year has shown me how to tackle my mental health problems head on. I never thought that I'd come this far on the road to recovery from where I was.

It's fitting I use this image. I feel the most free from what has weighed me down for a long time.

We are all fighting our own battles, Everyday. Live in the now, immerse yourself in nature, surround yourself with positive people and be kind, compassionate.

Now, enough if that and over to the geek info!

Here's a three fallow stag chase, the first has just lost a rut and the other two started chasing it away from his hareem!

Excuse me, could I possibly trouble you for some nuts, seeds etc? Whatever, I'm not fussy. Thank you.

It's often tricky at first glance to differentiate between grey and red squirrels (especially in molting season) many grey squirells have a deep brown or red hue to thier fur. The best way to tell them apart is always the ears and tails.

Red squirrels have pointy tufted ears as opposed to the rounded softer ears of the grey squirell. The red squirell also has a single colour tail whereas the grey squirell has a banded or "halo" effect tail.
