I’ve always had a soft spot for expired and experimental film stocks - the kind that feel a bit unpredictable, a bit chaotic, and are often far more interesting because of it. So earlier this year I loaded up a roll of 35mm Harman RED into my Pentax ME Super, fully intending to shoot something deliberate and cohesive. Naturally, that’s not quite how things went.

Harman RED has this intense, almost surreal character - strong halation, deep glowing highlights, and colour shifts that lean heavily into fiery reds and warm tones. There’s something about it that feels cinematic in a slightly unsettling way, like scenes pulled from a world on the brink, smoke-filled skies, heat haze, and that eerie “end-of-days” glow. It’s not subtle, but that’s exactly the point.

If you enjoy experimenting and don’t mind relinquishing a bit of control in exchange for something unique, I’d absolutely recommend giving it a go. It’s not your everyday film, but that’s what makes it so much fun!

A lovely Hasselblad XPan in beautiful condition, that sold the moment it went on our online site 👀
The XPan is something of a legend among film photographers.
