A brilliant way to finish the season on Saturday, at yet another new shoot!

This season has taken me to more new shoots than any other, and I’m so grateful for every invite, every early start, and every day spent in great company out in the countryside.

It’s been a season full of memorable days, hard work, tradition, and moments that remind me exactly why I love doing this. I already can’t wait to add even more shoots to the list next season.

Common questions I get asked at shoots:

❓ Is this your job?
⭐️ Absolutely not. I have a full-time job, this is just a hobby. I don’t charge either… so it’s not exactly a great business plan!

❓ Why don’t you charge?
⭐️ Because with money comes expectations and pressure. This is my escape. If I do a whole day and don’t get one photo, no one can complain (not that that’s ever happened).

❓ So why do you do it?
⭐️ I genuinely love everything about the day: the passion, the inclusivity, the dogs working, being outdoors, meeting new people, the traditions… and yes, getting my steps in too.

❓ How did you get into it?
⭐️ I used to beat and shoot, but when my son came along I had to change tactics. I still wanted him involved in game shooting and to understand where food comes from, so I picked up a camera. He came along with me, and it’s grown from there. He’s now 7 and still loves joining me when he can.

Muddy boots, careful hands, big smiles.
Understanding where food comes from, respecting the animals, and spending time outdoors. These are the lessons that last a lifetime.

A few photos from yesterday's very chilly shoot!!

In all honesty I really struggled with the light, I needed to change my settings for every which way I turned, but I still managed to get a few useable photos and I learnt a lot, which is part of the enjoyment.

But despite the cold, and the challenging light, I had a great day at a great shoot!

One of the best things about taking photos at game shoots… no-one can tell from the photo if you hit or missed the bird, or if your dog did the perfect retrieve or ruined the whole drive, the only thing you can tell is that a fantastic day was had by all.

The downside of having a second photographer on a shoot, is that they capture pictures of me in action… often sat down! 😂 And for anyone wondering, the umbrella is shoved down inside my coat and then tucked in to my trousers to keep it in place! 🤣 Tricks of the trade!!
