Sumatran orang-utans females give birth to just one infant at a time every 8 to 9 years. This makes their populations extremely susceptible to even low levels of hunting and so when people take them from the wild to keep them as status symbols and pets it has a significant impact on the entire population.

Happy Halloween! 🎃
That also means it is the last day of ☹️ I used to be absolutely terrified of crocs until quite recently when I have found a whole new love for them 😊 These modern day dinosaurs have lived on this planet for over 200 million years! We have only been here for around 300,000 years! With this in mind, there are now only around 3000 cuban crocodiles left in the wild making them critically endangered. This has only happened to them because of us. Humans have hunted them extensively and have destroyed a lot of their habitat even though they have a very small distribution. Sometimes they are hunted for the tourist industry, sometimes human consumption or other products. Doesn’t seem right that an entire species is on the brink of extinction just so someone can have a new handbag. So what can we do to help? Share about it! Share on you social media, get people talking. The more people that are aware about the situation the more likely that change will happen! Let’s save these awesome animals 😊🐊

Since there are only a couple more days of I thought I would post this shot of one of the cuban crocs at Paignton Zoo 💚 Since crocodiles are reptiles, they don’t have sweat glands and so a lot of crocs will hold their mouths open like this one is to help regulate their temperature! This behaviour is called mouth gaping and is a lot like a dog panting 🐊

Silvestre putting on a show for all of the visitors 🥰The orang nursery is always such a busy spot at Monkey World so I never usually get the chance to take many photos but on this particular day he climbed right to the top of one of the beams and I was able to snap this shot! 🦧

Sumatran Tigers are classed as critically endangered due to the destruction of their habitat for unsustainable palm oil plantations. Hunting is also still a serious threat to the species however it is strictly prohibited in Indonesia. Most of the remaining sumatran tigers live in protected areas, such as national parks 🐯💛

The dwarf crocodile is one of the world's smallest crocodiles, growing up to only 190cm in length. These crocs can be found in freshwater pools, tropical rainforests or wet grasslands in central and western Africa.Sadly these little guys are classed as vulnerable due to habitat change and hunting. Just look at that little face! 🐊💚

I had a go at a portrait of beautiful Sonika at Bristol Zoo and I am pretty happy with how it came out! Sonika is an Asiatic Lion which is the most endangered big cat in the world, there are thought to be only around 600 left in the wild. As there are so few Asiatic lions left, it is necessary to manage the populations in human care and in the wild if the species is to recover 🦁
