I had to have another long think about what share today as the image of the week. I did toy with a couple of landscapes but I plumped for this one instead. Why? Well, just because I love it!
This was taken at Abberton Reservoir in January last year. It was a very cold and frosty morning. I had never been there before and I was excited by the many different ducks. If you have ever taken the time to watch ducks, or any bird for that matter they take more care in their appearance than you’d think. Clean and neat feathers are clearly important.
I was there early and there were still several birds that were asleep waiting for things to warm up before venturing into the water. This Goosander (oh I do hope I have identified it properly – please feel free to correct me) was up and about having a good wash, sliding under the water just enough to refresh himself. When he came back up, the water clung to him like a protective barrier before dispersing. He then shook himself dry(ish).
I needed all of my long lens to catch this image and a quick fire of several shots from the shutter. The settings were fast in order to freeze the action, and I think it has done so to perfection. I love the wet look hair and the water droplets still in flight. I did think he was posing with this hairstyle so that I could take a photo of him.
This image has also made it to a canvas
When you have a bad hair day
But then
A stranger tells you it looks
AMAZING!

You can purchase the canvas in the gallery or on-line (details in bio) for only £15.

Ok, so not three French Hens, but three starlings
These were photographed almost exactly a year ago in Shoeburyness. A very, very cold blustery day by the coast. I had just started venturing out again with my cameras and was very surprised what wildlife was so close to home.
I have lived in the area all my life and have never thought of the Thames estuary as being somewhere to find wild birds. The tide was out and there were redshanks, dunlins and sandpipers they are so well camouflaged that I have previously not noticed them. Wandering out onto the mud I found some majestic white egrets (whose photograph is available in the gallery and on-line) but while they are fantastic, I decided to share with you these starlings.
They were part of a much bigger flock that were doing ariel displays. The group on the wall would vary between two or three to a dozen or so. These three were braver than the others and hung around much longer.
I was so excited with the narrow depth of field which so perfectly highlights the three birds. They are so close that you might be mistaken in thinking that there are only two. Their closeness inspired the canvas print with the words:
There are friends
There is family, and
Then there are friends that become family
We all have friends like that and if you wanted one for your special friend. You can purchase the canvas in the gallery or on-line (details in bio) for only £15.
