Fee Jackson

Fee Jackson I am an artist and Illustrator, working traditionally with art materials rather than on a computer!

I am a freelance artist and illustrator who works in a range of traditional mediums such as pen and ink, paint, graphite etc, I even paint on body models and create prosthetics and head pieces for photo shoots! Though I don't create the artwork on a computer it can easily be scanned and manipulated to suit the job. I produce all kinds of illustrations for books, advertising, logos, letterheads and

private commissions - no job is too small and I will always try to meet the clients needs. I have recently started venturing into the exciting world of theatre set design too, so I guess I could also say 'no job too large!!'
I also like to make small unusual items too, such as authentic feather quill pens and medieval style bone sewing needles and other small decorative items carved from bone - all good fun :)

More art things in the pipeline, but in the meantime, I'm starting my new job....eek!!!

Its not doing art, sadly ( it's just become way too difficult to be a full time artist at the moment! ) so I got a 'proper' job, which so far, I am really enjoying, though my training is more of a vertical take off than a learning curve!!

A large part of the job does demand creativity and problem solving, so I'm looking forwards to starting properly.

So...what's the job?

I'm about to be the new manager at the Severn Hospice shop in Whitchurch, so do pop in and say 'Hi' when you're next in town 😊

PHOTO - this is what happened last time I was let loose on a shop!!
The very lovely Lornashouse Lifestyle on the High Street, Whitchurch - a beautiful shop β™₯ -( even though they have normal windows now !! ) and well worth a browse.

Still working on the Lantern Parade. πŸŽ„

Now adding layers of colour and tone - then play with light and shadows a lot more.
Haven't painted people for a very long time, forgot how fun it can be.
I used to teach life drawing, and do a huge amount of life drawing, and observational drawing, it was all part of training to be an illustrator, then an animator ( I have been both) .

As an animator you had to learn how movement works, to understand physical construction and weight distribution in movement. Consequently I constantly analyse everything that moves, and how its moved, I can't not do it. I also store up information in my mind ( and sketch book) about the world around me and how its all constructed, and how it relates to everything else - it all sneaks into my head till I need it.

This looking, and remembering may seem like an amazing gift - but actually, though some of it is a natural ability, it was, what was taught in art college at one time - pre computers, pre AI.

I worry that it's no longer taught, students often don't even have drawing or life drawing classes anymore, and art in schools is so dumbed down and boring or simply non existent, sadly.

People look at the artists of the past and often ask, in wonder, 'How did they do that?', you here so often, people saying, that no one could do 'that' now - WRONG!!

Artist can, and do - it's just not particularly valued, and takes a lifetime to learn - unfortunately a lot of people view art, as just a nice little hobby that anyone can do ....its a 'side' hustle - or its perceived that 'proper art' is elitist and so out of reach that its devalued, unless you have the millions to buy a piece of art and lock it in a vault till it gains more value, then just sell it on!

It would be wonderful if art was valued again, if people invested time and effort into it, and if governments and the education system valued it, and if the public valued it - let's reclaim it, get drawing, get learning, get doing, get off A.I and create something real!

Not sure quite where that mini rant came from...I was going to delete it, but then decided not to......sometimes things need saying!!

much love :)

Playing around drawing Whitchurch.
Every year we have the lantern parade, and Blackberry Fair - both brilliant events that take form of parades of crazy loveliness through town. I usually get mixed up with them too ( Had a yukky lurgy this year so wasn't actually in it!)

Anyhoo, I decided to to attempt to draw the lantern parade, and see what happens!
I want to try to get the feeling of fun and jollity, and the magic of community creativity.

Now I've marked it out with a dip pen, I can start to build up the layers. By underpainting first you can bounce light through the top layer of paint and create a lovely tonal range that the viewer sees', but isn't aware they are seeing it.
..Right time for a brew, while this dries. 😊

Aiming for a sort of vintage Ladybird book illustration 'feel' to it.

So far I've 'watched' about four Miss Marple episodes, and come to the conclusion that Miss Marple did it! She mysteriously always happens to be around when a murder takes place!!

Oh, and I managed to do a bit of painting too!

I have shamelessly pinched Pieter Bruegels colour pallet and part of his composition to create my fox in the snow image.

I want it to have a similar 'feel' to an old Ladybird book illustration.

Anyway...bed time me thinks 😊

Another terrible photo!!
The thing with trees!

It's always very tempting to draw trees in a sort of generic flat branchy way, each branch neatly sticking out of a neatly generic trunk.

But, if you look at trees, they really aren't like that at all.

Each type of tree has it's own arrangement of ranches, and it's own angle of twigs at the end.

Some trees are twisty and get knarly with age, such as Oak's, others are slender with fine branches and twigs that droop at the end, such as birches, and others such as Ash have twigs that turn upwards at the end.

Each tree looks slightly different depending on it's age, time of year and growing conditions. Not to mention any damage to branches, fungus or missing branches.

I do have a slight tree obsession...the more you look at them, the more you see.

Enjoy getting to know trees. 😊
