Temple Arches, another piece of urban regeneration taking place near Leeds city centre. Trying to marry the old and new in one picture.

Waiting for the train in Leeds recently, not quite as tedious when traveling with a camera.

Kit Hemsley, of Kit Designs ( ), was kind enough to let me come and see her studio whilst she was busy preparing for the North Yorkshire Open Studios ( ) event. Running across two weekends in June (14th and 15th June being the second and final weekend for the Summer show), the North Yorkshire Open Studios festival, held annually, offers a unique opportunity to connect with local artists and witness their creative processes first-hand.

Working predominantly with Parian clay, Kit's work is inspired by memories of growing up by the sea. It draws upon the constantly changing coast as a source of both inspiration and meditation. The colours and sculptural forms prevalent across her work represent the magic she observes when out enjoying the beaches around North Yorkshire.

Working out of her studio in Runswick Kit sees every mistake as a learning opportunity with the maxim to “slow down, think about it, accidents happen” as a constant companion. This almost reflective approach to creativity fosters a continuous process of growth and adaptation.

I had wanted to talk to her about why creativity can be an important part of life, whether people see themselves as creative or not, but realised I was maybe thinking about things too much. Instead, I think her advice that art should simply "make you happy" is the best way to look at it.

Today is the annual planting of the 'Penny Hedge' in the harbour at Whitby. A tradition dating back to 1159 when the Abbot of Whitby imposed a penance on 3 hunters and their descendants for the death of the hermit of Eskdaleside.

If you want to read the story, I have photographed each page of the pamphlet from 1858, "taken from authentic resources". The hammer and horn are also said to be the original tools used for the ceremony.

This photograph was taken in 2019 when I started to take photography a little more seriously. A nice photograph from a day out experimenting with the camera and a soft-focus lens filter.

Photography is very concerned with time. The photographer decides which fraction of time to record, then that moment is fixed forever. Well, as long as there are pixels or paper anyway. Then there is the passage of time between when the picture was made and when it is viewed, in this case, only 6 years. In those 6 years, though, two of the landmarks in the image have disappeared from the town of Redcar, the blast furnace in the background and the old Regent Cinema in the foreground. It is remarkable how a small amount of time can change the relationship between viewer and photograph.

"All photographs are time exposures, of shorter or longer duration, and each describes a discrete parcel of time." John Szarkowski (The Photographers Eye)

The view through a window where I have spent many hours peeling potatoes over the last 13 years seems so much more interesting recently. Working on tasks that leave the mind free has been its own form of escapism. As we wind down our food service the view I may miss, but not the potatoes!

The wonderful returns to raise funds for the Whitby Disablement Action Group (Whitby DAG) for the 10th year on 7th and 8th of December.

The organisers are doing things a little differently this year to spread the occasion around the town of Whitby, so be sure to check the program.

If you are nearby it is a very unique addition to the festive calendar!

Stopped by the Castlerigg Standing Stones a few weekends ago and tried to capture the atmosphere. Some of the visitors looked to be capturing some of the serenity of the spot, whilst others enjoyed the view. I am informed that the celebration that was going on is to do with Samhain.
