STREET PHOTOGRAPHY - JOE HOUGHTON.
For our last formal meeting of the season, Malling welcomed back our old friend and acclaimed Photographer in the Emerald Isle Joe Houghton.
Joe gave us with his presentation on Street Photography covering equipment and technique, subject matter and confirmed the all important ‘get up and go’ for it attitude commitment.
An array of super images were seen sourced from Joe’s back catalogue and particularly his work in and around the city of Dublin itself.
Given the number of portraits involved Joe also advised on how to approach people in the street so as to reassure the subject and also to ensure personal safety.
This was a fascinating and informative evening which will have gone a long way to enthuse all those who harbour a desire to get on board with this subject.
Joe’s books are now available in leading web stores and are worthy of inspection and acquisition.
Thanks again Joe.

Malling Camera Club’s latest visitors were the amazing Gallyard Tudor Dancers from Sussex.

Despite the ever increasing price of fuel and inevitable roadworks the Gallyards turned out in force to demonstrate their art as well as their wonderful period costumes and musical instruments.

The Gallyard Tudor Dancers are a group of friends who made a decision to start up a Tudor dancing group to raise money for local charities. They are also committed to joining in events at some local Tudor houses to add to their local history events, hopefully helping them to raise money to keep these wonderful Tudor houses going and save all our heritage.

The evening presented some great photo opportunities as well as enabling our members to learn more about this most dedicated group and their activities around the region.

A thoroughly enjoyable evening and one we look forward to repeating in the future.

Presentation by Steve Carroll FRPS – Tuesday March 3rd 2026.

This week Malling were treated to a presentation by Steve Carroll on his trips to the North American Plains and neighbouring Canada.
Covering deep Winter mainly but including some Summer images his landscape photography demonstrated the socio changes that happened in North American Farming with the increase in Farm sizes and increased mechanisation.
Particularly noteworthy were the decaying farm houses schools and churches that were once part of thriving if relatively short lived communities that migrated to the region from as far away as Ukraine.
Also the move from traditional wooden communal Grain Silos to grouped Metal units operated by large corporate farming businesses.
Steve’s images are superb and show considerable planning and frankly resilience in the face of often extreme weather conditions (and potentially trigger happy locals).
A very enjoyable evening.

Malling v Aberdeen PDI Competition, Tuesday February 17th.
Malling Camera Club’s programme secretary Mike West came up with a new idea for an event for the 25/26 season, namely a friendly PDI competition with Aberdeen Camera Club.
Due to the distance technology was naturally employed and the show was run over Zoom, with the Southerners viewing the proceedings in the Hall.
54 excellent images were submitted, judged on the night by Martyn Pinches AFIAP AWPF from his home in Wales so making this a real tri-nation event.
With marks awarded out of 20 and demonstrating the tough job presented to the Judge, 15 images were deemed worthy of hold back status, with 5 subsequently given full marks.
Martyn’s judges pick went to Paul Davison for ‘Rain Dance’.
The eventual winners were Malling with 470 points versus Aberdeen with 444 points.
More important than the scores was having the opportunity to interact with the members of a distant Club, to see their work, and to keep the spirit of inter club communication alive and kicking.
Both Clubs enjoyed the evening and a repeat event next season is anticipated.
Malling send their best wishes to John Thorn and his colleagues at Aberdeen and also to Judge Martyn Pinches for a great evening.

Top scoring images, Aberdeen:
Ice Cream Girl by Rob Buchan.
Backlit Squirrel with Nut by Sandy McIntosh.
Hungry Moth by Gavin McHugh.
The Boxing Match by Rob Buchan.

Top scoring images, Malling:
The Platform Couple, by Alan Smith.
On Target, by James Alexander.
Watch very closely, by James Alexander.
Rain Dance, by Paul Davison.

Malling hosted their annual inter Club Print Battle on Tuesday February 10th with 11 clubs competing.
Despite some heart stopping moments when the power supply to the sockets was found to be absent just as the show was about to start full service suddenly reappeared and all was well.
Judge for the evening was our favourite ‘desert dweller’ – if not her neighbour’s apparently - Helen Taylor-Shore, who had the difficult task of reviewing some of Kent’s finest Photographic Prints covering just about all subjects.
As well as selecting those Prints for the top marks she also selected her personal favourite.
Congratulations to Invicta for taking the laurels this year and we look forward to hosting the event again.
Thank you again Helen for your lively and valued appraisals and thank you to all the clubs who participated.
Final results after adjustment of the tied positions scores and an unexpected 'Steward's Enquiry' are:-
1st Invicta
2nd Gravesend
3rd Maidstone
4th Bexleyheath
5th Malling
6th Reflex
7th Sittingbourne
8th Staplehurst
9th Parkwood
10th Crayford
11th Sevenoaks

Malling’s second Print Competition of the season was held on Tuesday January 27th at Malling Village Hall. Judged by Kevin Bell LRPS the revised marking system was employed which on this occasion raised a welcome quandary. Due to the high quality of all the images – and indeed the mounting and presentation thereof - a proposal was agreed to credit more than one image in each of the Gold Silver Bronze and Highly Commended categories. An unusual step one may say but one that was appreciated and endorsed by all present.
The images are presented herewith and demonstrate the challenge given to the judge.
Accordingly, results were as follows:-
Gold –
• Brown Bear, by James Alexander
• Sisters of the Burning Blade, by Paul Davison

Silver –
• In her Garden, by Alan Lomakin
• Time Out, by Alan Lomakin
• Fumbling Hands, by Colin Bristow

Bronze –
• Out of the Blue, by Colin Bristow
• Home before the Storm, by Alan Smith

Highly Commended –
• Amroth Beach, by Les Welton
• Rampart of the Riflemen Amsterdam, by Alan Smith
• Reculver, by Paul Davison
• Departing for a Night Mission, by Colin Bristow
• Blue Pumpkins, by Alan Smith

The second competition in Malling’s programme for 2026 was for mobile phone images. With numbers sadly depleted by lingering seasonal viruses some excellent images were presented by members and judged by the effervescent Alan Lomakin. The audience remarked on how quality in general has advanced and whilst not (yet ?) matching formal cameras the standards were really excellent. The top scoring images were as follows:-
Gold Medal: Mill House, by James Alexander
Silver Medal: Barrister Taking Steps, by Colin Bristow
Bronze Medal: Reflection, by James Alexander
Highly Commended: Jubilance, by Alan Smith
Highly Commended: Mouth of the tunnel, by Mike West
