Looking back to these incredible images from Cpl Hobbs captured as part of an air to air photographic sortie on Op CHESSMAN. The photo platform for this tasking was a Polish Air Force CASA C-295M which launched from 22 Tactical Air Base, Malbork, Poland and met up with a Royal Air Force Typhoon, a Polish Air Force MiG-29, a Polish Air Force F-16 and two Swedish Air Force JAS 39 Gripens once airborne.

A special thank you to those behind the scenes whose valuable expertise ensure sorties of this type can take place safely. What a batch of imagery to have in your portfolio!

As part of ODI 100, celebrating the 100th anniversary of aviation from the airfield that became RAF Odiham, the station recently welcomed a host of historic aircraft to the airfield. Our personnel were on hand to record the event with Cpl Tierney joining other aviation photographers in the sky to capture some of the arrivals and AS2 Head covering the ground movements.

A great set of images to mark these celebrations and record this unique event.

What a glorious day for Trooping the Colour! With the sun shining brightly, the RAF flypast brought a fitting finale and the RAF Red Arrows displaying their famous smoke along The Mall once again.

Whilst the ground activity was expertly covered by our army colleagues, we had numerous personnel in the air including AS1 Lewis as Circus10, Mr Wheeler from the RAF Cranwell section hovering above the palace, the RAF Odiham section in the Chinooks leading the flypast and members of the VisCom Ops team also in the Chinooks and the standby helicopter.

A great event to cover as always and made even more special knowing the Royal Family are watching from the balcony below along with the thousands of spectators we can see from the sky.

And just like that we are approaching the end of Ex Cobra Warrior 25-1.

The aircraft and supporting personnel have been working hard throughout the exercise, all captured by our team at RAF Waddington.

Exercise Cobra Warrior is the largest air exercise run by the Royal Air Force. The exercise is designed to train exercise participants in high intensity large force tactical air war fighting operations controlled by directing staff at RAF Waddington.

Aircraft on show at Waddington have included the F-15SA of the Royal Saudi Air Force, the Dassault Rafale of the Armée de l'Air et de l'Espace and the F-16's of the Turkish Air Force.

We know a lot of you have spent the exercise on the fence line at RAF Waddington and we hope you have enjoyed the experience and got yourself some great shots for your portfolio!

A highlight of our teams' participation in large-scale exercises is the opportunity to work alongside unique aircraft from other countries, some very rarely seen in the UK.

Check out some of our favorites from AS1 Barnard and AS1 Jones, who've been covering Exercise Red Flag with participating aircraft from the United States Air Force and Royal Australian Air Force.

Exercise Red Flag is currently underway at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada, USA. The exercise is celebrating its 50th year and 48 years of UK participation.

Royal Air Force Typhoons, Voyager and personnel have joined counterparts from the United States and Australia. The exercise provides realistic, complex and large-scale missions in one of the world’s toughest and best combat training environments.

We have a pair of Visual Communicators out covering the exercise and we look forward to seeing more content as the exercise progresses.

The judging for the 2024 Royal Air Force Photographic Competition, sponsored by Wex Photo Video, has been completed with the winning imagery and videos selected across a variety of different categories.

With over a thousand images and videos submitted, the 11 judges found themselves spending close to a week narrowing down their final choices, before selecting a 1st, 2nd, 3rd and Highly Commended.

Alongside the winning imagery, a selection of 9 images were then chosen to go head-to-head in the annual Peoples’ Choice category where the general public can vote over the next 2 weeks, via the Royal Air Force's official page, for their favourite image. With the result announced at the RAF Photographic Competition Awards in RAF Bentley Priory on November 14th.

The pinnacle of the RAF Photographic Competition is the RAF Photographer of the Year award, which was won this year by Mr Andrew Wheeler of RAF Cranwell with his portfolio of six images.

The RAF Section Category was won by RAF Lossiemouth with a diverse and varied portfolio of imagery which included images captured of the RAF’s newest subhunter, the P-8A Poseidon.
Competition Judges had the following to say.

Aviation photographer, Hesja Air-Art Photography, said “First of all, I would like to thank you very much for entrusting me with the role of judging in such an important competition.

It is a great honour, privilege and responsibility for me.

When I first saw the submitted images, it immediately told me that it would not be easy to choose the best ones. Some photographers had phenomenal opportunities to make their works, others had better equipment, others with greater technique or creative ideas.

When choosing the best imagery, I had to take into account the composition, technique of both photography and processing and probably the most important - the wow effect!

The calibre of the photos is extremely high. It took a lot of work for me to decide on the winning images. But I liked that and enjoyed the challenge of judging! ”

Documentary Photographer Giles Penfold added, “It was such a privilege and pleasure to judge these photographs. Many congratulations to all those who entered and in particular to the remarkable winners.”
