Three generations on one sofa in Havant, and the whole thing was done in ninety minutes.
Mum, dad, big sister, both grandparents and a two-week-old — all photographed in their own living room. No car journey with a newborn, no parking, no clock to watch. The baby fed when he needed feeding and we simply carried on afterwards.
The part I always think about most is the older sibling. A new baby is a big emotional shift for a three-year-old, and being asked to smile for a stranger on top of that is a lot. Her parents had told me beforehand that she takes a while to warm up, and that a giraffe and a bright red bird were the two most important things in the house. So I photographed the baby first and let her watch from the rug until she was ready. When she came over, we had something to talk about.
By the time she was lying next to her baby brother, she wasn't performing for anyone. She was just at home, on her own floor, with her giraffe.
