It is always a strange sensation to wake up from a dream feeling nostalgic, especially when you find it difficult to remember a single detail.

Why is that? Why do we wake up from dreams feeling a sense of fulfillment when we cannot recall what happened? Is it because somewhere deep in our subconscious we are aware of what happened and that is somehow enough to satisfy our brain? What stops us from consciously remembering? And why?

I took this photo during a trip to Scotland this summer and somehow, somewhere in my brain, it felt familiar. Like a dream, as if I had been there, in that exact same spot, before. But I hadn't; I had never been to this location before and yet I felt as if I was right where I should be. When I captured this image, I knew exactly how I wanted it to look and feel, exactly. When I was editing the photo, I did so without much thought, I just kind of went through the actions and somehow knew when it was finished.

It was as if my subconscious was leading me, directing me the entire time. But, why?

You are more than what you see, what you tell yourself. You are a force to be reckoned with, a cut above the rest. You must not forget the one thing so important in this life that you cannot see through the forest; self love, self respect.

Command it. Demand it. Stand for it.

Stand for you.

Leaving the past behind does not mean you forget about what brought you to this very moment. Instead, it means you accept the past for what it is, your foundation; without it, you would not be where you are today. The good, the bad, the ugly and the complicated, it has all played a small part in your bigger picture. If you fail to acknowledge that, then your past will stunt your growth rather than encourage it.

Only you can decide which step you take, which way you grow, and it's those little decisions which will always bring you to tomorrow's today.

Life's Shadow.

Your past does not have to define who you are today, but at the very least it should remind you of how far you've come. What defines you is who you are in that moment, the words you say, the actions you take; each moment is your chance to step out of your life's shadow and into the light.

You walk by, day after day, completely unaware of the history you leave behind. You cast your glance in one direction or another, but you never really see what is there in front of you. You speak words into the air not knowing the impression they leave behind. You stand there asking where your support has been, but I've been there, right by your side.
