Back in 2023, a fellow portrait photographer encouraged me to create a series of self-portraits. As I’ve got older, I’ve become less comfortable being in front of the camera, but the experience proved to be incredibly valuable.
Stepping in front of the lens gave me first-hand insight into what my clients experience. Being photographed can feel awkward and vulnerable, and that discomfort often shows as tension in the body—the camera never lies. It reinforced just how important gentle guidance can be. The smallest adjustments to posture, expression, or positioning can make a remarkable difference to the final image. Experiencing this for myself has made me even more aware of the importance of creating a relaxed environment and helping clients feel comfortable throughout their session.
