A large male spider crab (Maja brachydactyla) out in the seagrass a few weeks back! The arrival of these large crabs in spring and early summer is such a markable event in the seasonal calendar of our seas. Driven by an instinct to mate and moult in shallow water, these crabs will march up to 100 miles inshore.

With the June summer solstice nearly here, the peak of the migration this year has definitely been and gone now, and over the next few weeks and months many of these larger wanderers will begin to hike back into the deep. With a lifespan of 8 years, this could be the 5th, 6th or 7th time this male has marched.

🌱🦈 Awesome to feature on tonight’s Isle of Wight episode of BBC Countryfile - showcasing some of my PhD research dropping BRUVS in the island’s waters and talking Isle of Wight sharks and rays! The island’s marine biosphere is a special place and there are so many questions about our local seas we still need to answer to better understand and protect them!

Also epic to appear alongside the fantastic Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, National Trust Isle of Wight and The Garlic Farm, representing just a portion of how rich the Isle of Wight’s biosphere is and the local work taking place to enhance it!

🦈🌱 Excited to share that I’ll be featuring in the latest episode of BBC Countryfile tomorrow at 18:15 as they explore the Isle of Wight!

I’ll be showcasing some of my PhD research, chatting about and dropping baited remote underwater video stations (BRUVS) into the island’s seagrass. All while discussing our local marine biosphere!

The episode will also feature the brilliant work of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, Garlic Farm Isle of Wight, National Trust Isle of Wight and Ventnor Botanical Gardens!

🪸🌊 Spaces are still available to join myself and local foraging instructor Joseph from FieldStudy for a guided marine natural history and coastal foraging walk in Ventnor this Sunday (May 31st) from 15:30!

Regaining popularity, foraging the intertidal shore and coastal cliffs is a traditional and ancient way of interacting with the marine environment, that when done sustainably and responsibly can have major benefits in promoting our connection to the seas alongside us.

We’ll explore the ecology and marine biodiversity of the intertidal zone and its species, learning about life on the island’s rocky shores and reefs and how to ID key marine and coastal plant species, including how and when to forage for them responsibly in this fascinating environment!

New life in the seagrass this morning! The egg-case or mermaid’s purse of a small-spotted catshark (Scyliorhinus canicula) deep in the shelter of the meadow! Based on the algae starting to grow across its surface this egg-case was probably laid a few weeks ago, tightly bound to this tough Cystoseira holdfast!

The laying of egg-cases at this site happens year on year, with good numbers of female catsharks arriving to deposit their mermaid’s purses often in the densest, most sheltered, spots in meadow. This is with good reason too, this egg-case could be developing for another 11 months as the pup grows inside, making choosing the perfect spot worthwhile!
