Gianpaolo Mario

Gianpaolo Mario I am a photographer and artist with a passion for all things creative. I am inspired by nature; the sea; the seasons; my family and the islands beauty

Welcome to my page. I am a photographer and artist from the Isle of Wight with a passion for all things creative. The sea is never the same on any two days or even any two tides which is what makes photographing seascapes so interesting. Whether enjoying glorious sunshine, getting soaking wet and cold or a mixture of the above, I have always loved being outdoors with a camera. It has been

a long and interesting journey since I inherited my Grandpa's SLR camera in the 1980s. I'm self taught and use photography as a tool to express my art and to record inspirational things I see in day to day life. I am continually working on new images inspired by architecture; nature; the sea; my family; the island's beauty and the materials I have to work with. I regularly add to the galleries on here, instagram and in the outlets which stock my work. You can visit my studio/gallery in Ventnor to see what new things i am working on, just give me a call to arrange a day. All of my images can be ordered as limited edition archival prints on canvas or fine art paper. I hope you enjoy looking at them as much as I did taking them. If you have a favorite place or specific shot in mind please get in touch and I will do my best to help. If you would like something truly unique ask for a bespoke size, finish or one off commission. I also shoot Food, Weddings, Events and Interiors.

I probably missed the best moments and it was raining on the way so I was just happy the clouds cleared enough to reveal some cosmic colours late Monday night.
It's always worth the drive out to Newtown, absolutely love it over there, even without the aurora... but this time it was extra special!!

It gets to the end of the summer and you start to think about getting away for a bit. Exactly a year ago me and Hannah went on a road trip, 6 days, no kids, no plans, just the van loaded camping and surfing gear and my camera.

We spent the first night in the New forest as we usually do anytime we take the van off the island. An amazing national park right on our doorstep and it was the start of the Autumn Pig Pannage season. This ancient tradition dates back to the time of William the Conqueror who founded the New Forest in 1079. Pigs are allowed to roam free and forage for fallen acorns, chestnuts and beech mast which can be toxic to the ponies and cattle who roam free year round. Road users have to give way and at times be very patient.

The next day we headed into Dorset... the Jurassic Coast and Kimmeridge Bay.
As soon as we got there we knew we didn't need to drive further west to Devon or Cornwall as we had been discussing, but opted to explore this 'new' area.
We went on some great walks, got to some of the classic spots and found some little hidden coves, some fossils and some surf.

There were similarities to our islands coastline, especially the Back of the Wight, from St. Catherine's to the Needles where it is natural, rugged and dramatic.

Now, once again it is sadly the end of summer, we are planning something, no biggy... a road trip somewhere, not sure when, hopefully before the sea gets too cold. Maybe Cornwall or Wales, so many places to see and it's always exciting!!

Beautiful evening earlier this month, waiting for this special harvest blood moon to rise over ventnor bay. Revealing itself through the low bank of cloud as a thin crescent, we then watched the earth's shadow slowly move across the surface for the final stage of the lunar eclipse.

This morning's lunar eclipse behind the Pepper Pot.

This iconic stone structure on St. Catherine's Down is locally known as 'The Pepper Pot' or St. Catherine's Oratory. It can be seen from miles around and overlooks the southern coast of the Isle of Wight. It was built in 1323 by Lord of Chale Walter De Godeton as an act of penance for taking casks of wine from the wreck of St. Marie of Bayonne stranded on Atherfield Ledge on 20 April 1313.

It is Britain's only surviving medieval lighthouse, and the second oldest (only the Roman lighthouse at Dover being older

I was up early to get some photos of the full moon setting, no plans just thought if it was clear it would be nice to get out. I could see the moon from the kitchen window whilst making coffee... then the eclipse started.
At first i thought it was cloud. For some reason I thought this was happening tomorrow so the fact i didn't miss it and i got some sort of image to share makes me feel ok, but to think i could've done so much better... it was an epic morning, loads of mist, a heavy frost and a great sunrise too!

This was a warm and still November evening spent exploring low tide way out off Seaview just before dark with five of the tribe.

The kids cant wait for summer to come round, for the sea to get clear again and warm up...

They're all growing up so fast but get on so well, especially when they're outdoors ❤️

Freshwater Bay 5 years ago today.

On 9th Feb 2020 Storm Ciara hit our shores, causing widespread wind and flood damage. I remember this day really well, the excitement of the huge swell smashing on the sea wall in front of the Albion Hotel and getting soaked by the massive spray. Awareness, creativity, adrenaline, caution ... an overload of the senses. Force of nature!!
