RAF RESCUE.
For over 40 years this colour meant help was coming.
This is XZ597, a Westland WS-61 Sea King HAR3, the RAF’s all-weather search and rescue workhorse. One of the famous yellow SAR fleet that flew hundreds of missions rescuing mountaineers, hillwalkers, sailors and aircrew around the UK.
The type first entered service in 1969 and the final aircraft were retired from the active inventory on 30 September 2018. The RAF chapter ended when the final distinctive yellow Sea King departed RAF Valley on 15 September 2015, bringing to an end nearly 40 years of service with the RAF.
Now registered G-SKNG, XZ597 has been restored to flying condition by the Historic Helicopter Group in Chard, Somerset and is back in the air doing what she was built for - on the winch.
The numbers behind the icon: max speed 208km/h, climb rate 10.3m/s, range 1,230km, service ceiling 3,050m, max take-off weight 9,707kg. But the number that matters most is the thousands brought home safe.
That yellow paint saved thousands of lives. Brilliant to see it in the air again.
