Graham Nixon Photography

Graham Nixon Photography I’m a London Wedding Photographer with an approach emphasising partying over posing. I’ll put your friends and family at the heart of your photography.

I love photographing people behaving authentically, and I have a very gentle approach to creating heartfelt portraits that are as much about how you feel as how you look. I see weddings not as strict timelines and spreadsheets but as celebrations of everything that is best about being alive.

The getting ready coverage isn’t about makeup. It isn’t about a flat lay of the shoes and the rings and the invitation arranged on a marble surface.

It’s about the energy in the room. Sometimes that’s a party, Bolli open before ten, everyone talking too loud, music on. Sometimes it’s quieter than that. A particular kind of nervous that only arrives when a year of planning has finally run out of road and all that’s left is the thing itself.

The flowers are here. The dress is here. The car is outside. This is happening.

After twelve months of decisions - the venue, the menu, the seating chart, finding a photographer who gets you - the machinery is in motion and there is nothing left to do but let it move. That shift, from planning to living, from future tense to present - that’s what I’m there to photograph.

And sometimes, in the middle of all of it, someone sits down by the window and goes quiet for a moment. Just for a moment.

I photograph that too.

Strict photojournalism has one rule: observe, never intervene. I hold that rule carefully. And occasionally I set it aside.

She was heading for the lift. I suggested the stairs instead. That’s all. What happened next - the way she moved, the light falling across the staircase at The Petersham, the particular quality of a woman descending toward the rest of her life - none of that was mine to manufacture.

The distinction matters. There’s a difference between setting a scene and directing a performance. Between creating the conditions for a moment and creating the moment itself. I’m interested only in the former. The camera does the rest.

Knowing when to nudge, and when to be quiet - that’s the job.

A dress on a hanger is a dress on a hanger.

A dress on the woman who chose it, in the room where she’s getting ready, with her mum doing up the last button - that’s something else entirely.

I don’t photograph dresses. I photograph people wearing them. The difference is everything.

There are two types of wedding photography. Staged, and documentary. Both are valid. Only one is what I do.

Here’s how a day with me actually works.

Family and group photos happen in one focused twenty-minute slot. No dragging people away from the bar for the next three hours. We get everyone together, I hand the moment over - do what you want, say what you want, stand how you want - and I shoot it. Done. Everyone goes back to the party.

Couple portraits sit somewhere in the middle. Not posed, not candid. I set a scene. I give you a direction. Walk here. Hold hands. Look at each other. Say something you’d never say in front of a room full of people. Then I step back and I photograph what happens. That’s where most of my favourite frames come from.

The rest of the day? Pure documentary. I’m there. You forget I’m there. That’s the point.

The one thing that doesn’t work - and I say this gently - is trying to recreate a natural moment. If it didn’t happen, it didn’t happen. A staged candid is just a bad photo of two people pretending.

Your day is full of enough real ones.

Trust it.

Nicole and Thomas came down from the North for this. Marylebone, a registrar, and a dress that made everyone stop.

Some couples fill a room. These two didn’t need to try.

27°c. Pizza. The groom’s brother as celebrant — which meant the ceremony was brilliant and the crying started embarrassingly early.
We slipped out between courses for portraits in the streets around MKII. No plan. Just Hackney doing what Hackney does on a hot Saturday afternoon. Then back inside, she stood up to give her speech, and by the end every glass in the room was in the air.
Two frames. Both black and white. Both doing more than I can.

Regent’s Park. Tourist season. Blazing sun. Half of London for company.

Then the In and Out Club. Old portraits. Silence. The first quiet moment she’d had all day.

She’d earned it.
