Picauville Memorial - a lovely gathering of remembrance this morning 😢

The Picauville memorial commemorates those airman of the 9th Airforce’s Troop Carrier Command and troops of the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions who lost their lives in the area of the memorial on June 6th 1944.

The memorial is built of local stone, with six black plaques.

An engine from a C47 aircraft that crashed near Picauville in the night of 5 to 6 June 1944 forms part of the memorial. Sixteen parachutists and four crew men died in the crash of the plane.

The aircraft commemorated on this memorial took off from Welford and Upottery airfields.

The main task of Troop Carrier Command was that of supporting airborne assault missions, both in the dropping of the assault troops, followed by re-supply missions.

Troop Carrier Command also delivered fuel and ammunition to fast-moving units close to the front lines, and sometimes even behind enemy lines.

THE BRITISH NORMANDY MEMORIAL
From the very beginnings of an idea to a place of serene beauty where people will gather to remember and reflect for generations to come.

The British Normandy Memorial was officially opened on 6 June 2021 by His Majesty The King (then Prince of Wales) as Royal Patron of the Normandy Memorial Trust. The Memorial records the names of the 22,540 servicemen and women under British command who fell on D-Day and during the Battle of Normandy in the summer of 1944.

This includes people from more than 30 different countries. Inscribed in stone, their names were finally brought together on a hillside overlooking Gold Beach. The site also includes a French Memorial, dedicated to the memory of French civilians who died during this time.

The Normandy French Resistance Monument (NFRM) with Yvonne Somrani.

Every June 6th, people from around the world gather in the Normandy Region to commemorate Operation Overlord and the liberation of Europe.

The French people take part in these celebrations and remembrances, vowing to "Never Forget". While most of the focus is on United States, British and Commonwealth efforts, this monument was built to honor the French Resistance's sacrifices and contributions to the success of Operation Overlord.

The Normandy French Resistance Monument (NFRM) honors the three components of the French Resistance: the man represents the Guerilla, the young lady represents the Auxiliary, and the young boy represents the Underground. NFRM pays homage to the vital role the French Resistance played from 1940 to 1945 and most importantly in the success of the Allied Landings at Normandy on June 6th, 1944.

The parachutes ringing the monument represent the 93 OSS Jedburgh teams that parachuted into France. Together, the French Resistance, enabled by Allied special operations, conducted unconventional welfare.

This shadow war, and the immense courage and sacrifice of all involved, helped to overthrow the occupying German power.,
