Why is ending racism a debate?
Today I finally visited to see ’s exhibition, The Purpose of Light.
This question stops me. Time and time again. It’s 2025, and we’re still having to ask why ending racism is a debate.
This isn’t just a statement, it’s a mirror. A mirror of the choices we make, the courage we summon, and the cost of refusing to stay silent.
Research shows unconscious bias shapes decisions and behaviours everywhere, especially in the workplace, often in ways we don’t even notice. Some conversations are beyond uncomfortable, but the ones that matter the most often are.
In every workplace I’ve been in, I’ve always spoken up against racism. I’ve often felt like the outsider, the “black sheep”, but I’d rather stand for what’s right than allow harmful behaviour to continue unchecked.
Integrity isn’t loud. It’s the quiet decision to do what’s right, even when it comes at a personal cost. Courage is standing firm when the easier path is to look away.
It’s taken me a while to mentally get to the stage where I could visit this gallery in person, and specifically see this piece, a piece that hits home quite hard for me.
It reminded me that staying true to your values is rarely simple, but it shapes everything that comes after.
Progress, justice, and self-respect all begin with the choice to speak, and act, with integrity.
We can all do better.
Thank you Misan, Aki, and everyone who has made this such an inspiring space to experience such powerful photography; one that challenges, educates, and reminds us why integrity, among many other things, matters.
