Emma Stokes Photography Landscape & Nature photographer based in Kent. Life took me in other directions as I grew up and I spent 20 years working in the oil and gas sector in London.

My love of photography goes back as far as I can remember...from taking my first photo in my back garden at the age of 4. My camera however was always there in the background and when I was made redundant in June 2017 it turned out to be a blessing in disguise...when I went on my first photography workshop in Dungeness I suddenly felt like I was where I belonged. My photographic journey began...I am hoping it is a journey which will last a very long time.

I had a lovely day in East Sussex on Friday with good friends Jo and Keith who I met 8 years ago during one of the first ever workshops I went on in Dorset!

Our little ‘photo faffing’ days have continued ever since and this one did not disappoint with so many opportunities to try out different things. Starting off in Friston forest I tried out my new macro lens as well some creative multi-exposure shots. Then we went onto Birling gap where we spotted some interesting plants before we even got to the beach. As the tide went out the flint and chalky foreshore gave some interesting compositions we were even blessed with of a little bit of colour as the sun set!

Thanks Jo for spotting the little mushrooms and pretty leaf!

One of my favourite corners in Penshurst, and this beautiful maple was in full Autumn glory earlier this week. I always like trying out different angles of the same scene and thought I’d share my favourites.

A fleeting overnight stop in Death Valley at the end of a road trip this summer gave me the chance to photograph the incredible Mesquite sand dunes. I was hoping for a sunset shoot but at 53 degrees I decided to opt for the ‘cooler’ early morning visit instead.

Finding compositions among the sweeping peaks and troughs was tricky but I was naturally drawn to simpler more minimal compositions. I just wish I could have been there for longer!

A fleeting evening visit to Rhossili beach while staying on the Gower Peninsula this weekend coincided nicely with an outgoing tide and the revealing of this shipwreck of the Helvetia.

This Norwegian sailing ship became stranded here while on route to Swansea from Canada in 1871 when the crew had to abandon ship. The next day its cargo of timber was strewn all over the beach and over 150 years later its hull is still exposed at low tide creating some interesting (if a little challenging) compositions.

I recently spent a wonderful evening with good friend and wildlife photographer Heidi Crundwell in the Ashdown Forest photographing the Exmoor ponies. The ponies are grazing ponies and they absolutely live up to their reputation….waiting for them to stop munching and lift their head up took a more patience than I usually have but was worth it in the end. It was a beautiful evening with some stunning views!

I was lucky enough to have a fab few days photographing the Cornish (and Devon) coastline recently and the wildflowers were at their best. It was a lovely few days of photography with good friends, the perfect escapism. Here are some of my favourites…

I visited the wonderful Kings Wood in east Kent with a friend on Sunday, such a magical and peaceful place. If you look closely you can see her in one of the photos, the trees really are majestic!
