LIV Golf star Sergio Garcia has put himself forward to captain Team Europe at the 2025 Ryder Cup in New York, with the hope of his former rival Tiger Woods taking control of Team USA.
Europe reclaimed the Ryder Cup in Rome last week after they defeated their American rivals 16.5-11.5, securing a seventh-straight victory on home soil. On the back of their win at Marco Simone, attention has already turned to the 2025 event, with the U.S. re-taking hosting duties at Bethpage Black.
Taking to social media, the son of LIV Golf boss Greg Norman, Greg Jr, predicted the two new captains for the battle at Bethpage, throwing Garcia and Woods' name into the hat.
The Australian tweeted: "2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage. Captain Tiger Woods vs. Captain Sergio Garcia." Clearly a fan of the idea, Garcia retweeted the post to his own feed. If Norman Jr's wishes were to come true, it would reignite one of modern golf's great rivalries.
Woods and Garcia's feud was one that took place on and off the golf course, which included a clash at Bethpage, where they both battled it for the 2002 U.S. Open, which Woods eventually prevailed in. Garcia missed just his second Ryder Cup in 24 years last week, after becoming ineligible for the event earlier this year.
This came after Garcia resigned his DP World Tour membership after being sanctioned by the circuit for joining the LIV Golf setup. A report from The Telegraph claimed the Spaniard made last ditch effort to make the 2023 team, offering to pay the DP World Tour £700,000 in fines, but this was rejected.
It appears the 2017 Masters champion is keen to make a return in 2025, and with LIV stars set to be given the chance to reapply for membership amid peace talks between the DP World Tour, PGA Tour and Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia, Garcia's hopes may become a reality.
