🦁 Ever seen a primate that looks like a cross between a lion and a baboon? Meet the gelada – one of the most unique monkeys on the planet, and another gem from this morning’s visit to Dudley Zoo.

Native to the Ethiopian Highlands, geladas are the only primates that primarily eat grass – over 90% of their diet! Instead of swinging from trees, they live on high cliffs and open plateaus, using their dexterous fingers to pluck blades of grass like tiny foragers.

That impressive "cape" of hair and the hourglass-shaped red patch on their chest makes them unmistakable – especially during mating season when the colours become more vibrant.

Despite their dramatic looks, geladas are peaceful and highly social, living in large groups and communicating with complex facial expressions and even vocal "chatting".

Another reminder of how wonderfully diverse our planet is – and why it’s worth protecting 🐾

🐅 Just look at those eyes...
Caught a rare and powerful moment with one of Dudley Zoo’s Sumatran tigers this morning.

These majestic big cats are among the rarest tiger subspecies on Earth – with fewer than 400 left in the wild. Native to the Indonesian island of Sumatra, they're incredibly elusive and perfectly adapted to jungle life thanks to their narrower build and dense stripes for camouflage.

Each tiger has a unique stripe pattern, just like a fingerprint, and they’re also excellent swimmers – often hunting prey in water!

But these beauties are under serious threat from illegal poaching and deforestation. Dudley Zoo is one of many working with international breeding programmes to give them a fighting chance.

It’s a powerful reminder of what we stand to lose if we don’t protect our planet's biodiversity.

🦒 Say hello to the tallest residents of Dudley Zoo!
I spent part of my morning admiring these gentle giants – giraffes really are fascinating animals.

Did you know that giraffes can grow up to 6 metres tall and have the same number of neck vertebrae as humans (just longer – obviously)? Despite their height, they only need about 5 to 30 minutes of sleep a day, and often nap standing up!

Each giraffe’s coat pattern is as unique as a fingerprint, helping them blend into the African savannah. Sadly, wild giraffe numbers have declined dramatically – some populations by over 40% in the last few decades – due to habitat loss and poaching.

Let’s not take these peaceful creatures for granted.
More zoos and conservation groups are stepping up efforts to protect them before it’s too late.

🦧 Spotted this little legend this morning at Dudley Zoo – an adorable young orangutan enjoying a relaxed start to the day. 🐒

Did you know orangutans are the only great apes found in Asia? They're highly intelligent, use tools in the wild, and share nearly 97% of our DNA. Native to the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra, they spend most of their lives up in the trees – which makes seeing them up close like this even more special.

Sadly, they’re critically endangered due to deforestation and illegal wildlife trade. Zoos like Dudley play a key role in protecting and breeding them as part of global conservation efforts.

Swipe through the pics – it’s hard not to fall in love with those eyes!
Let’s not forget how important it is to protect their wild habitats too 🌿

For a tiny duckling, the world is full of wonder… and danger.
From the moment they hatch, predators lurk in every shadow — foxes, herons, crows, even large fish.

It’s heartbreaking, but on average, only 30% of ducklings survive long enough to grow up and have ducklings of their own.
Nature is beautiful — but it’s also brutally honest.

This little one was full of attitude and sunshine, and I truly hope it makes it.

Robins might be a very common bird in the UK, but they’re a favourite subject for many nature photographers — and it’s easy to see why.
This cheeky cousin of the sparrow has a voice that makes you forget the world around you. Once they start singing, you just stop and listen.

Sometimes they come so close, you feel like they’re posing just for you — this one nearly landed within arm’s reach.

🎣 Fishermen don’t search for fish… they search for signs.
And nothing says “there’s fish here” like the presence of a grey heron.
Silent. Patient. Precise.
If you spot the heron, you’re already in the right spot.

✨ A moment of magic at Baggeridge Country Park ✨
While wandering through the woodland trails, I caught this stunning grey heron perched perfectly on a branch, intently scanning the pond below for ducklings. Shot against the strong midday sun, the light was beautifully diffused through the canopy of green leaves, wrapping the scene in a soft, glowing atmosphere 🌿☀️

Captured handheld with the Tamron 150-600mm, wide open at 600mm — sometimes nature rewards patience with composition you couldn’t plan.
