Some video footage of the twilight rays from Friday night's aurora, which is not that different from what I was seeing to the eye. Taken between around 2013 and 2035 UTC.

Impressive aurora last night, especially early on in the late evening twilight. This aurora was the result of a strong solar wind following a cme impact around 1500 UTC , which increased the solar wind speed to 700-800 km/s for a time. With declining solar winds speeds and magnetic field strength into the evening, the best of the aurora was always likely to be early in the night, and the rising almost full moon just after 2100 UTC hampered the view later on as the display slowly faded.

Some pink rays last night, as the solar wind transitioned from a coronal mass ejection (CME) to a coronal hole high speed stream (CH HSS). Didn't bother staying up as it was never likely to be that great to the eye, given the April full moon. Taken at 0222 UTC, 2nd April 2026.

Time-lapse from our last night up in Sutherland, with the strongest aurora display of the week, reaching G2 (Kp6). Conditions were challenging with strong winds and blustery showers, so I used my heavy duty waterproof jacket to protect the camera from the worst of the rain and hail.

Taken between 2238 and 0430 UTC, 13th/14th March 2026.

Not much luck with cloud cover last night, waited patiently for the upper cloud to clear, only to have low clouds scudding across the northern horizon at just the wrong time 🙁. Suppose I shouldn’t complain too much, at least I got to see some of the display, and it's not as if I've been starved of auroras of late 🙂

Time-lapse of last night's aurora display, which took a while to get going so that the climax was largely obscured by cirrus clouds, although I could see the rayed band low down to the northeast, and also some ray tops to the northwest through thinner clouds. Taken between 2103 and 2342 UTC, 22nd March 2026.

A few shots from last night’s aurora, which was caused by a couple of cme’s which left the Sun on the 16th and late on the 17th. It wasn’t looking that promising during the afternoon, cause although the magnetic field was strong at around 20 nt, the all important orientation was not favorable with the bz component pointing north. That changed during the evening with the bz slowly edging south until the arrival of the second cme at around 2018 UTC, which increased the density and the field strength to around 30-35 nt, with the bz sitting around the 20 nt southward. The aurora built up quite quickly, with a bright green arc at around 10-15 degrees by 2130, but the strongest burst of activity was later in the night between 0030 and around 0100 UTC, when the rays brightened significantly and extended overhead to form a corona. There was a fair amount of cirrus through the evening, but this wasn't too much of an issue, given the size and brightness of the display, although it did eventually cloud over by around 0200 UTC.
