Nigel Hicks Photography

Nigel Hicks Photography The professional photography, writing and publishing of Nigel Hicks. My works hinges around tourism, ecotourism and wildlife photography.

I have been a professional photographer and writer for nearly 30 years, based initially in Hong Kong, but for most of my career in Devon, southwest England. Over the years projects for publishers, agencies and commercial clients has taken me all over the world, from China to Chile; from the tropical rainforests of the Philippines and Brazil, to the volcanoes of Iceland and the steppes of Patagonia

, to the deserts of northwest China, and much more besides. As well as being hugely experienced, I am also a member of the prestigious National Geographic Image Collection (the photo publishing division of the USA’s National Geographic Society), and a Fellow of the British Institute of Professional Photography (BIPP), the highest qualification in what is one of the UK’s leading professional photography bodies. My work has appeared in a huge range of magazines and books from Dorling Kindersley’s Eyewitness Travel Guides to the New York Times. I have authored and provided the photography for about 30 books, the most recent of which include Beautiful Somerset, Beautiful Cornwall, Wild Southwest, and Wild Philippines. In my home area of southwest England I run regular one-day photography workshops, covering mainly landscape, nature, travel and architectural photography. I also run occasional photography tours both within the UK and internationally. Details of all these are regularly posted on the Nigel Hicks Photography page, and can also be found on my website at www.nigelhicks.com.

Dusk over the estuary of the Taw and Torridge Rivers, looking from Instow towards Appledore.

A beautiful day turned into a beautiful evening, with this lovely dusk. I shot this while running my recent Taw and Torridge coastal photography workshop a couple of weeks ago. Everyone had a wonderful day along the shore and in the dunes.

You can see more workshop images at: https://www.nigelhicks.com/photography-workshops-courses/photography-course-images/

I've two more workshops this spring: Dartmoor in spring and Exmoor in spring.

Details are at:

I thought you might like to see some of the photography that I've been doing for my ongoing book project about the marine life of the Philippines. So here are a few images of just some of the colourful reef fish you might see swimming around a Philippines coral reef.

The fish you'll see in this little taster are:
1. Longfin spadefish
2. Roving Coral Grouper
3. Redlip Parrotfish
4. Coral Rabbitfish
5. Yellowmask Surgeonfish

I hope you'll enjoy the photos!

It's almost April and suddenly it's nearly time to start my spring photography workshops!

This year's spring series kicks off on 26th April with a day of architectural photography in the beautiful city of Bath, shooting views and details of its many historic buildings.

This is followed on 9th May by some coastal landscape photography in the estuary of the Taw and Torridge Rivers, on Devon's rugged northern coast.

Then on 16th May it's the turn of Cornwall's rugged Atlantic coast, where we'll be photographing some stunning, rocky coves around Boscastle. We'll be shooting through the afternoon up until sunset.

30th May will be my annual Dartmoor in Spring workshop, when we'll be photographing in ancient woodland along the banks of the River Dart, and then out on the open moors nearby.

Finally, 6th June will see me running my Exmoor in Spring workshop, shooting in riverside woodlands, on open moors, and then along a little of the national park's coastline.

All in all, it'll be five great workshops in some beautiful parts of southwest England. So if you'd like to come along to have a great day of photography, improving your skills and generally enjoying the great outdoors please sign up.

Details of all the events, along with sign-up, can be found at https://www.nigelhicks.com/photography-workshops-courses/one-day-photography-courses/photography-courses-programme/.

I'll look forward to hearing from you, and to seeing you this spring.

Meanwhile, here are a few images from previous workshops to whet your appetite.

I hope the new year has got off to a good start for everyone. For me it has had a flying start, in the form of being commissioned to do another book about the Philippines.

This time it's entitled Underwater Guide to the Philippines; a guide book to the dive and snorkelling sites around the country, and some of the marine life you're likely to encounter.

I'm really quite excited to get stuck into this. Last week I spent a day in Paris, visiting the Paris Dive Show, where I was able to drum up quite a lot of support from Philippine dive centres and resorts that were exhibiting there.

Now it's a question of gathering together data on diving from dive centres all over the country. Actually doing some diving and underwater photography will come later.

Meanwhile, I thought I'd post this little video of work I've done in the past in the Maldives and the Philippines, to set the mood. I hope you like it!
