Forever one of my favourite cities.

San Francisco has a lot of iconic architecture from the Transamerica Pyramid (right) and Coit Tower (centre) to the more modern shimmering glass buildings such as the Salesforce Tower (left).

This particular view of the three buildings that form part of the impressive skyline is from the end of Pier 39 in San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf.

I am finally making my way through all the images from my trip to California at the start of the month.

This was by far the best time I’ve been to Yosemite. With a record dump of snow on the Sierra Nevada Range and warm temperatures, the waterfalls were in overdrive!

It was great to escape the bustle of the Valley and hike up to Inspiration Point. The cloud formations to the west made for some dramatic shadowing on El Capitan!

I was also particularly pleased with my new purchase of some Gamma MX pants. My legs were nice and toasty!

I came across these rather soggy eastern grey kangaroos this morning whilst on a hike in Cooleman Ridge Nature Reserve. Did you know that the collective noun for a group of kangaroos is a "mob"?

The word kangaroo derives from ‘Gangurru’, the name given to eastern grey kangaroos by the Guuga Yimithirr people of Far North Queensland. Kangaroos are of cultural and spiritual significance to Aboriginal people across Australia. Their meat provides a staple protein source and are still eaten today; hides were used for clothing and rugs; and their skins crafted into bladders for carrying water.

On New Year’s Eve last year, Dartmoor experienced a fair amount of snowfall. I packed my camera bag and headed out to photograph one of the herds that I had photographed since the end of the first lockdown. It didn’t take too long to find them, as they were not far from their usual spot.

Not long into my shoot there was a mini blizzard, which resulted in a large number of snow-dusted ponies. This particular image is one of my favourites from the three hours I spent photographing them. This mare’s mane was completely caked in snow and she posed perfectly for a shot with Pew Tor in the background.

We will remember them.

Armistice Day this year marks the centenary of the Royal British Legion (RBL). Founded in 1921, the Royal British Legion is a charity that was set up after the Great War to support veterans and serving members of the British armed forces, and their families.

Pictured here is the Royal Marines Memorial which stands on the southern side of the Royal Citadel on Plymouth Hoe. It is one of many local military memorials that commemorate the armed forces of Plymouth, the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth.

Browsing though my Lightroom catalogue, I came across this photograph from this summer. Whilst walking around the lake at Stover Country Park, this herring gull (Larus argentatus) landed on this fallen tree at the edge of the water.

Normally I wouldn’t be jumping to photograph a gull, but this one looked particularly amazing with the backdrop of a large rhododendron tree!

Here is an interesting fact about Charles Bridge in Prague.

Charles IV, the Czech King and Holy Roman Emperor, laid the first stone on the bridge in 1357. That’s not the interesting part! He was very interested in astrology and numerology, and placed the stone down at precisely 05:31am on 9th July 1357. He chose this date because of its written form: 1-3-5-7-9-7-5-3-1 (year, day, month, time).

Whilst in Prague, you are bound to visit Prague Castle and see the Castle Guard. The Castle Guard is a brigade of the Armed Forces of the Czech Republic who serve the President of the Czech Republic as a security force, much like the Household Division in London. These soldiers stand guard at the entrances of the castle and rotate their sentry duties every hour, on the hour.

Each day at noon, you can see the Changing of the Guard ceremony. It is a ceremonial exchange of flags and duties between the active and relief guards. When the sentries handover their positions, and the sun is out, they bang the butts of their rifles on the cobbles and step back into their sentry boxes. They then put on their sunglasses and apply some suncream to their noses. After completing this action, the two sentries nod to each other, bang their rifle butts and step back outside and stand completely motionless for the next hour as they guard the castle.

Following the inscription of the Great Spas of Europe UNESCO World Heritage Site, I was invited out to the Czech Republic for a celebration with the team and members of the local and national governments involved with the project. It was a great pleasure to see everyone again and to travel abroad for the first time in two years - thanks Covid! In fact, I last travelled on a plane in October 2019 when I flew back from the Czech Republic. I guess I am just carrying on with my travels where I left them before the pandemic!

Making the most of my visit to the Czech Republic, I added some extra days onto the trip to visit Prague for the first time. It is an incredibly beautiful city that is full of history, and due to travel not long resuming, the city was not that busy. I am already planning my return trip; fingers crossed for some snow on my next trip!
