I've been walking the same two miles of ancient Roman wall since I was a boy.

For more than fifty years, Calleva Atrebatum — the Roman town buried beneath the fields of Silchester in North Hampshire — has been part of my life. A playground when I was young. A place for quiet and contemplation as I got older. And for the last four or five years, somewhere I've been returning to before sunrise, in every weather a Hampshire year can produce, with film and digital cameras.

The result is my new book — CALLEVA: A Year Inside the Walls.

It isn't a history of the site. It's a photographer's field notes from twelve months inside one of Britain's best-preserved Roman town circuits. January frost on two-thousand-year-old flint. Elder in flower above the wall in June. The buried street plan pressing through dry July grass. October mist. November bare walls. The mistle thrush singing from the churchyard yew.

Illustrated throughout with film and digital photography — colour and black and white — and woven with the natural history and folklore of the plants and trees that have made the walls their home since the Romans left.

Available now in paperback on Amazon UK. The link is in my bio, or search CALLEVA: A Year Inside the Walls.

If Silchester, Roman Britain, or the quiet Hampshire countryside means something to you — I hope this book does too.

Not every photograph starts with a finished image.

This was the view on the back of my camera as a Kestrel hovered over the grassland at Calleva, moments before dropping like a stone into the long grass below. One of those split-second encounters where instinct takes over and all you can do is follow the action.

Whether it caught anything or not, I’ll never know, but watching these birds hunt around the old Roman walls is always a reminder that nature continues its daily routines among the remains of a town abandoned centuries ago.

A new study has found that photographers are physically unable to walk past good window light without saying something nobody asked about.

🐰📸 Sometimes photography doesn't go quite to plan!
I headed out for a quick walk around the ancient walls and amphitheatre of Calleva Atrebatum hoping to capture a few landscape images. While I came away with the shots I wanted, it was the local residents who stole the show today!
A few very cute bunnies were enjoying the sunshine among the grass and wildflowers, and they proved impossible to ignore. So instead of landscapes, I thought I'd share these little characters with you. 🐇❤️
Sometimes the unexpected photographs are the best ones.

Sheltering from a summer storm...
inside St Mary's Church, Silchester ⛪
Then the rain passed.
The long grasses beside the Roman Wall
were dripping with light and colour.
Seven photographs.
One fleeting moment after the storm.
📍 Silchester Roman Wall, Hampshire

Caught in a summer storm while walking the ancient Roman walls of Silchester, I took shelter inside St Mary's Church. When the rain finally passed, the long grasses lining the footpath were glowing beneath dramatic storm clouds and fresh evening light.
Some moments in landscape photography last only minutes. This was one of them.

12 photos.
1 soggy Princess Bear.
100% chaos. 😂🐾💦
Juno (George’s Dog) decided today was the perfect day for maximum splashing, zoomies, water attacks, and general princess behaviour 👑🐶
From elegant river queen… to soaked fluffy gremlin in approximately 3 seconds 🤣
Safe to say she had the BEST time ever 💙
Which photo captures Juno’s personality best? 😂🐾

🌅 A nice surprise in the garden this morning. Two moments from the same visitor – a Red Kite 🪶 landing in a tree overlooking the garden, keeping watch from above, and then a second shot where a curious Magpie 🐦 dropped by, seemingly keeping an eye on him too 👀🌿
Always interesting to watch these little interactions. The Red Kite stayed calm, the Magpie stayed close, and for a few moments they shared the same branch and the same view 🌳✨ Nature putting on its own quiet show at sunrise 📷🍃

Nice evening walk tonight and this little squirrel seemed more than happy to pose for the camera 📷🐿️
Three shots, three different moments, and not a care in the world. Always nice when wildlife decides to slow down for a few seconds and let you work.
Sometimes the best photographs are the unexpected ones you find along the way.
