Snaizeholme | North Yorkshire, UK

Another trip to this incredible location - we couldn’t have asked for anything more. We had buzzards and heron on our arrival, voles, two deer and then an absolute bus-load of reds.

The kits were on top form - playing with one another all over, darting up the trees and jumping all across the woodland floor. Several times they approached us, climbed over us and sat on our bags!

The Jaffa Society certainly scored a big win on this trip - plenty of laughs, images and experiences of the best type. Couldn’t have asked for more!

Rannerdale | Cumbria, UK

A dash to Rannerdale after work on a Friday - always a bit of a chance, it’s a 200 mile plus round trip but 100% worth it.

Lighting wasn’t great, clouds were as enthused as a Sunday’s workforce and I was entirely overwhelmed for compositions but my god - what a time to be alive.

The colours. The craic with people. And all this on top of celebrating Sir and his 100th Birthday! We’re a lucky group of people to have him walking among us.

Big love.

Mad Red | Wensleydale, UK

Somewhere I’ve wanted to visit for a long time, but for whatever reason, never getting to.

A weekend trip took me too close to not even attempt and see these lovely creatures; and how glad I am that I took it.

Walking the short distance from my roadside parking, the weather was hot and skies clear. Within moments of getting into the woodland I saw my first red.

I could have sat here all day - seemingly I was a bit later than ideal, but wow. Will return!

Orange & Mint [Sauce] | Settle, North Yorkshire

They’re just brilliant to watch, aren’t they? It’s as though they’re discovering they have legs every few steps or so…hilarious to watch.

Up above the historic market town of Settle, we spend a lovely sunset watching the lambs playing and basking in the final warm rays.

Lovely stuff.

Having visited a Birds of Prey centre and then seen the incredible images by .photography and I’m feeling a ton of feathery love for these beautiful creatures.

The little owl is a really old one from an incredible morning - my first one shooting wild owls. An absolutely incredible experience and beyond satisfying to be part of.

The remainder are from - a lovely place to visit and one made especially great by seeing how my toddler absolutely lost his mind seeing the birds in flight.

Animals are brilliant!

Dalwhinnie | Scotland, UK

The “going home day” is always a sad one - especially when leaving Scotland. I think we certainly found a decent “hack” now - Dalwhinnie! The drive there is incredible, the location is perfect and *that smell*. Oh my days!!

After a brilliant tour by our host, Lucy, we were able to experience some of Dalwhinnie 15, Winter’s Gold and a special edition.

Dalwhinnie whisky holds a special place in my heart - being the whisky of choice on my wedding day a decade ago. It’s not my usual “go-to”, but I forgot just how enjoyable and light it is.

Perfect after a mooch about the Glens and Moors of Scotland!

Glencoe | Scotland, UK

The returned to Scotland recently for what is becoming an annual jolly - thanks for the craic,

The weather was plenty dramatic - our concerns over water levels were clearly noted as we arrive to an incessant Scotch mist.

Can’t complain - the place is beautiful with cascading falls and it keeps you cool, which is very welcome!

I’ve so many images to go through and plenty of notes of what I did wrong and where I didn’t challenge myself (compositions, as usual). I NEED to get away from that tripod…

Anyway, here’s a few for your viewing pleasure and hopefully to get you thinking about a visit to Scotland!

Durham | North East England, UK

It was truly an incredible experience to see this male kingfisher up close - until now, it’s only been a flash of electric blue through the woodland that could be called an encounter.

All in, I spent around six hours listening to a stream, watching nuthatches, a woodpecker and other birds before prying myself away. Even as I was packing up I had two return visits by this kingfisher.

I can see this easily becoming a bit of an obsession - that buzz you get when you hear the “squeaky brakes” call announcing its arrival is quite the high.

Staithes | North Yorkshire, UK

A lovely morning out with a greatly missed friend - decent colour and mindless chatter were the order of the day.

It’s just occurred to me that I’ve never actually walked down into the village, so I’ll need to return and remedy that soon enough.

Keep your eyes peeled for some updated images and maybe even some detail content.

Roker Pier | Sunderland, UK

A bit of a sneaky post - currently laying beside my toddler as he snoozes and I listen to the mix of snuffles and squeaks he makes.

This photo is from Christmas Eve of 2017, which feels like an innumerable time-slip away.

Photography, by its very nature, is a forensic record of specificity or emotional charge that - for me, it usually has a visceral memory or physiological response tied to them. Strangely, I cannot tell you what I was thinking or feeling the day I took this image.

Likely I was chuffed it wasn’t raining, happy there was abundant colour in the sky and such like. But, tying it into the role of being older and a father, it certainly draws on the changes I’ve felt between then and now.

As you know, I’ve habitually been found to be quite the grumpy one.
A fuzzy little “Hodenkobold”, if you will.

But, without overstimulating myself with significant moments stacking up each time I take a photo, I’m a great deal more present these days.

Stoicism fascinates me - little quotes from great minds give food for thought, and at the very least - a welcome distraction from rage and disharmony.

A favourite of mine recently, and reinforced by my son and the time I have with him on an evening and weekends would be:

“You don’t have to turn this into something. It doesn’t have to upset you,”

- Marcus Aurelius

Perhaps this is me getting a little bit more mature, as I approach 40. Or perhaps I’m just realising have moments, although significant, don’t always need to be riddled with meaning just to qualify them as great or good.

All that from an old photo, a snoring toddler and a bit of sleep deprivation. It’s not all bad, right?
