I’ll always encourage parents to get into a few of the photographs too. Even if you’re tired. Even if you don’t feel particularly photo ready.

Your baby isn’t going to notice any of that when they look at this one day. They’ll just see themselves, brand new, tucked safely between Mum and Dad.

I think his face tells you pretty much everything you need to know about this cake smash. 😂

A wooden spoon, a giant cupcake and an entire load of sunflowers apparently make for a VERY good first birthday.

If your baby is approaching one, it’s worth getting your session into the diary before that birthday suddenly sneaks up on you.

Two tiny babies, side by side, exactly where they’re happiest. ❤️

Newborn sessions are always led by the babies in front of me and sometimes that means adapting things a little to suit what they need on the day. There’s never any rush to achieve a particular pose or photograph. Their comfort comes first, always.

You don’t need to turn into a completely different version of yourself for maternity photos. Jeans absolutely have a place in the studio too.

We can make them feel beautiful without making them feel overly posed or unlike you. The aim is still for you to look at the photos and think, yep, that’s me.

There comes a point in some cake smashes where the babies have quite clearly had enough of our nonsense. 😂

And when that happens, we stop. No trying to force smiles when they’re done. Although there may occasionally be time for one very quick, spectacularly sulky photo first because LOOK at those faces. 😂

Pregnancy photos don’t have to be all about standing beautifully with your hands on your bump. Sometimes there’s already a small person very much involved in the story too. 😂

I love including older babies and children in maternity sessions, because this is a pretty big change in their world as well. And photos like this will mean even more when there are two of them running around.

Apparently the wooden spoon was the real star of this cake smash. 😂

Why use your hands when someone has provided perfectly good equipment?

Cake smash sessions are always a bit unpredictable and that’s half the fun. Some babies dive straight in, some cautiously poke one finger into the icing, and some immediately develop their own highly efficient cake eating system.

There really isn’t a right way to do it.

We give them time to explore, make a mess and show off all those brilliant little expressions they have at this age.

If your little one has a first birthday coming up, it’s worth getting your session in the diary ahead of time, especially if you’d like your finished images ready around their birthday.

And yes, enthusiastic spoon users are very welcome. 🎂😂

I think Dad deserves some credit here because holding one newborn can feel terrifying enough at first.

Two at once? That’s advanced level parenting. 😂

These are some of my favourite photographs to include during a newborn session because they don’t need loads of styling or complicated posing.

Just Dad, his babies and those enormous hands suddenly looking even bigger next to two very tiny heads.

Partners are always encouraged to get involved in newborn sessions, even if they insist beforehand that they’re “not really a photo person”.

Your babies won’t care whether you felt awkward in front of the camera.

They’ll just see their dad holding them when they were this small. ❤️

Two babies. Two tiny sets of fingers and toes. Two completely different little people already making themselves known. ❤️

Photographing twins is always a bit special because there’s this connection between them that’s fascinating to watch.

We work completely around the babies, especially when one or both need a little extra support. There’s no rushing, no expectation that they need to behave a certain way for the photographs and absolutely no reason why tubes or medical equipment need to stop us capturing this part of their story exactly as it is.

These two curled up together are just gorgeous.

If you’re expecting twins and wondering how a newborn session actually works with two babies, please ask. I’m always happy to talk you through it before you decide whether it’s right for you.
